Door Dimples

Door Dimples
I am really enjoying my new 2006 RL (I have about 600 miles on it) but I've noticed that the door dimples don't work very well, i.e., I have to keep pressing/holding/ swiping them to lock the doors--and sometimes they just don't work at all. Should I take the car back to the dealer to have them checked out? Unlocking the door with the handles is NEVER a problem. Suggestions welcome.

I almost always lock my dorrs with the switch by the inside door handle as I'm getting out. But I did try the dimple just to see how it worked, and it locked the doors flawlessly.
But Ernie makes a good point ... be sure you're not wrapping your hand around the handle at all, or you'll confuse the system.
If it's not doing right, take it back!

I have to hold my thumb over the dimple for a couple of seconds, or sweep it over the dimple a couple of times for it to work. However, I use Mike_TX's method usually. Just old habit, I guess.

Interesting. I just went out to my car and tried it again.
Several of you say you have to hold your thumb on the dimple several seconds or try repeatedly. Mine seems to lock virtually immediately when I touch it. I did about 6 lock-unlock cycles and the doors beeped and unlocked as fast as I could touch it.
Maybe mine is hyper-sensitive, but it works great.

My dealer has a person in their new car delivery department spend about an hour going over the features, setup and operation of the RL upon delivery. They showed us a technique of waving the back of your hand over the handle to lock it. Just have to barely brush your skin over the dimple area.

This was a problem with all the early 2005 RLs. Not sure if the thread is still on the board. My understanding is that most everyone had their door handles replaced including me. Before change, locking worked about 50% of the time in the sense that if it did not work right away there was nothing you could do and you had to use the FOB. But, next time it could work just fine.
(unlocking always worked)
After replacing handle, I have yet to experience a problem - it always works and you barely have to touch it.
Disappointing that it has re-appeared.

I've never had a problem with mine so I would recommend having them checked.
One odd thing though... if I have my key-fob in the same pocket as my Palm Pilot... it won't work. I have to take it out and put it in the other pocket. So make sure you don't have other electronics in your pocket and try it then.
