Car shut off!

I was driving my 05 RL down the street when it just shut off. It has gas and the battery is good. I had to get it towed home. Thank you AAA! I also had to use the key to activate the interlock just to get it in park. Now it won't turn on. It won't even spin over. It does nothing. The starter is good, and the fuel pump cuts on. But it won't spin over at all!! And clues?

if it wont spin over how do you know the starter is good?

And you had a thread about your key system.

Battery cables. Check their connection to the battery and the opposite end as well.

Someone else reported this recently and it turned out their cable came loose.

The dealer advised me my key problem was my door handles, and it is out of warranty. I had the starter checked at Auto Zone.

oo7spy I have checked the cables at the battery, but I haven't checked them at the other end. I will try that. Thanks!

PS I forgot to say that when I turn the lever to start the car I have full power. The lights work, the navi unit powers up. Everything works except the motor! Would a bad starter cause my car to shut off while I am driving?

If your door handles are shot you will have to start the car with the key.
The fobs are useless.

Sorry, but if you never solved the original problem it only gets worse not better.

Main Relay??

Just a thought, but have you checked the main relay? It takes a few minutes to get to it, but it almost sounds like that's the problem.

Something shorted it (as oo7 said the battery cables might have been the culprit) as you went over a bump, cables were not secure and the main relay fried. Better to spend the $50 to $60 on that relay then $$$$ on replacing electrical systems.

Anyway, just a hunch.

It was my PCM. It shorted out. The dealer has no idea why.

Excuse my ignorance, but can anyone tell me how a PCM and ECU differ?

Essentually the same just one term refers to the more modern interface.

ECU or ECM was primarily an emissions control interface and aligns with OBD I technology.

PCM i a more modern interface and typically includes engine and transmission diagnostics and aligns with newer OBD II technology.

Just curious, what did it cost to have the PCM replaced? I can't imagine that's an inexpensive repair....

NEWS UPDATE!!! My dealer says the PCM is $1013.00. But when they put the new one in, it shorted out also. So now they are saying that a sensor in the transmission caused the PCM to short out. They are also saying that the sensor can't be replaced so that I need a new transmission!!! Sounds like crap to me. Could it be the main relay?? Any ideas??

$,1013 And now you need a tranny?

Hmm... I'd check the main relay. Something's just not right. Just my opinion, but i've never heard of a sensor in the tranny causing all these problems.

OMG. That sucks. I would get a second opinion, even if it's from a different dealer. I don't know that I would say the dealer is trying to pull a fast one on you...more likely it could be a mis-diagnosis from the technician.

Don't you hate it when highly skilled automotive technicians just start replacing everything in sight ? And you pay for their mistakes along the way.

Mostly happens with electrical stuff. Burned out ! Shorted out ! Zapped ! Total loss.
And we believe it since electrical is magic to most of us.

Most things mechanical or electrical can be fixed and I guarantee that expensive boxes like the PCM / ECM has a repair depot somewhere that fixes them and returns them to the refurb market.

This is from the garage...may help you, may not, but sounds similar...

TSB 07-017: Safety Recall: Fuel Pump Relay May Cause Engine No-Start or Stalling

Background

A manufacturing fault with the fuel pump relay (PGM-FI Main Relay 2) could cause a coil wire inside the relay to break. If this happens, the fuel pump will not operate and the engine may not start. If the relay fails while driving, the engine may stall without warning and a crash could occur.

The dealer says that the fuel pump relay was replaced and that it is working. I am trying to find out what sensor in the transmission is casuing this problem so I can get a second opinion.
