Anyone ever wrecked a loaner car?

As the title says....we were t-boned by a guy running a red light at 40-50mph. It was a 2009 RDX loaner from the dealer (our 05 RL was in for service). I feel horrible about wrecking their car, but at least we're ok for the most part. The side airbag saved my wife from severe injury.

I'll post a picture if someone can tell me how....maybe I don't have enough posts yet?

That's good there wasn't any serious injuries.

I've had a handful of accidents with my own cars through the years (no fault of my own)...:shakehead , but never had one with a loaner.

Well the main thing is that you guys are ok. If the other driver had insurance then it should be ok, they are a dealership after all and this is something that can happen.

It's called an accident for a reason and it's a dealership, they have insurance so I wouldn't worry much about it. Glad to hear you're alright.

I believe your insurance will be used to repair/replace the vehicle. You signed a waiver to pay for the damages when you took the RDX.

Here's the pic.....thanks for the help neuronbob.

My insurance would have covered the damage, but the guy that ran the red light was ticketed so his insurance took full responsibility even though he claimed he had the green light (several witnesses contradicted that). He was such a loser...didn't even come and check to see if we were ok, apologize, or anything.

The dealer was just thankful that we weren't injured and didn't seem to concerned about the vehicle.

Looks like the car held up pretty well considering the impact. Most importantly good to hear you and your wife are okay.

"...didn't even come and check to see if we were ok, apologize, or anything."

Not saying the guy wasn't a jerk but he could have been instructed by his insurance company to not say a thing to you or anyone else. Otherwise, it could be considered an admission of fault.

Glad you're O.K. Just a note, Acura was the only car company with all models getting the highest crash protection ratings recently.

That is an amazingly slight amount of damage for a "40-50 mph" side impact.
Below is the result of a 31 mph side impact of a 3300lb mass with SUV proportions on a new RDX done in IIHS testing.

What type of vehicle hit you, and are you sure about the speed?

In any case, glad all are ok and that the acura performed so well.

Luckily it wasn't a perfectly centered impact like that, as it would have been a much worse crash at least judging by that picture.

The impact was more centered on the back side of the rear door, so I think that the rear tire might have absorbed some of the impact. Even with that rear biased impact, the center post between the doors was pushed into the car behind the passenger seat.

I said he was going 40-50 mph because the posted speed limit on the road was 40mph and he didn't even slow down or hit the brakes according to witnesses. His vehicle (Toyota Tacoma extended cab) wasn't drivable and had to be towed also.

Here's a different view.

I'll bet you are exactly right about the rear tire and associated components absorbing the impact and preventing more intrusion. What a difference a fraction of a second can make.

Since it sounds like you were moving, some of the energy would have been transferred differently along the length of the car and would likely result in less damage then the side impact testing done by honda. if i'm not mistaken the RDX in the tests is stationary while an object rams the car.

Honda/Acura's crash properties are one of the reason we only buy them. I totalled a 1st gen RL and everyone walked away without a scratch.

I revise my statement, the person who hit you is likely responsible for the damages. However if you have no-fault insurance it will be yours. And/or you cannot get his details. The dealer is not on the hook for anything. Think of it like a rental car company. That's how they treat lawyers.

Safety is a big reason I buy Honda as well. I walked away from a high-speed, multiple rollover accident in a 1982 Civic coupe almost 19 years ago. I've bought almost exclusively Honda products since then.....if a low-tech unibody Civic with no airbags can save me like that, imagine what my wife can survive in her Pilot or I can in my RL. I know of no one on this board seriously injured in the crash of an RL.

All side impact tests are done with stationary vehicles. The fact that the RDX was moving would not significantly mitigate the damage done--actually, I can imagine reasons to expect it might be worse. If the Tacoma was indeed going 40-50 mph, a trivial amount of lateral movement of the RDX would occur between initial contact and maximum intrusion. The raison d'être of side impact testing is to simulate and draw conclusions about exactly this scenario--being T-boned at an intersection, where, in most cases, both vehicles are moving.

Semantics I guess, but you did not wreck the car, the guy that hit you did.

Glad to hear you and your wife are ok. My G/F is still going though the restitution process for when her RDX got hit head on at 40mph by some moron bending over because he dropped his cell phone while texting going around a curve.
