Am I hearing things? Screeching sounds

When I drive away from work with my windows down in my '06 RL, I hear a brief, high-pitched screeching sound as I pull away from the parking lot. Having not paid close attention until this afternoon, I always thought it was another car's brakes squealing, but now I think I'm hearing a sound from my car that is bouncing off a nearby building.

It isn't my brakes, because I'm not on the brakes. I suppose it could be a belt that slips a little until the car gets going.

I will have to listen more closely when I go places after the car has been idle, but I'm wondering if anyone else has heard such a thing. I haven't noticed it with the windows up, but I haven't been paying attention. An intermittent squeal is kind of worrisome what with all the technology under the car.

Any thoughts?

How long does it last? More than one rotation of the wheels?

Remember the ABS runs tests when you first enter Drive. It tends to make a slight buck when you engage Drive as the brakes likely pulse.

I back into my garage, and I have hear a slight squeal as I pull out, but not afterward. I assume it is the ABS test and usually the 1st brake application will cause a squeal until any surface rust scrubs off the rotors. Being in Florida the rotors rust overnight with all the humidity.

It's your brakes. Did you have the brake TSB (05-021 front, 07-029 rear) done? Mine made that noise when I wasn't applying the brakes and it stopped when I was. The TSBs cured it completely.

The squeal happens after about 400 feet of maneuvering out of the parking lot at slow speeds. Once I got onto the street and accelerate to speed, I heard it. I'd say there are 2 or 3 instances of the screeching sound that happen in rapid succession, each screech lasting between one second, give or take. I am not applying the brakes when I hear the sound.

I haven't had any TSBs done to-date (I'm still due for the power steering recall). Does anyone have a copy of the TSBs they can scan and/or post -- or a text description of the problem?

Send me your email address and I'll send you the front brake TSB (05-021). I don't have the rear one but the TSB 07-029 is what they noted on my paperwork when they did the work.

I reposted the TSB on the front brakes in the TSB thread. It's here...

I've characterized the screeching a little bit more. After I drove the car after it sat in the lot at work for 8 hours, every time I pressed the gas, I'd hear a high-pitched chirp or whistle. I could hear it from a standstill, or if I let up on the gas and then pressed the gas.

By the time I got home about 15 minutes later, I could no longer cause the sound in similar circumstances (pressing the gas from a standstill or while moving).

If the windows are closed, the sound it not audible inside the car. But with the windows open, it is easily heard.

It's the brakes. When mine screeched, it was louder with the windows open and much louder if I was near a wall or in a tunnel where the sound would be reflected. TSB - a simple fix.

One more data point -- the screeching seems RPM-dependent. It occurs at right around 2100RPM. It chirps/screeches when I press on the gas, regardless of gear. If the RPMs are low, then there'll be a screech as it passes through 2100RPM.

I wonder if it is the dreaded propellor shaft bearing starting to go, and not brakes?

My 05 RL started making screeching sounds on low RPM when my windows are down. Its coming from the passenger side. Plus when making low speed turns I get a creak that sounds like its coming from the suspension that is also on the passenger side. Any ideas folks? I guess I'll be taking a trip to the dealer soon.

My RL has been making some screeching sound in the front of the right and left wheels for the past two months. It only makes the sound when the car is in motion and stops when the car is at a dead stop. I only hear it when I'm driving down a small street or alley when my windows are down. It would screech for a second and stop for a second then screech for a second again like a pattern. I made two visits to Acura with no luck but learn that it's not the brakes and the sound is only produce on ground. For some reason Acura kept assuming that it had to do something with the brakes. Acura tried looking for the screeching sound by lifting it in the air and putting it in drive but no screeching. They tried taking my old oem brake components apart, checking them and putting them back together but still didn't stop the screech. After two failed attempt, I hoped that with the new Rotora brake kit, the sound will go away. A month has past and still hear it. I think it has something to do with the front axis or differentials.

The car is in the shop this evening for the screeching and the power steering recall. For the screeching, my service manager is considering applying TSB 07-026 (October 30, 2007), which covers various models through 2006, including all 2005 RLs and 2006 RLs with VINs from 6C000001-6C012432.

Symptom: "When driving under light acceleration, you hear an intermittent pinging, rattling, or squealing from the engine compartment. The noise can easily be mistaken for an engine ping or spark knock. In some cases the noise happens only during engine warm-up."

Cause: Intermediate shaft heat shield is loose on its mounting bushings.

Corrective action: Replace the shaft heat shield and specified nuts and gaskets.

I was skeptical at first, but reading the symptoms certainly aligns with what I'm hearing. Especially hearing it during engine warmup and under light acceleration. I'm always concerned that they'll say they could not reproduce the sound, but based on the detailed description of the problem, my service manager seemed inclined to do the TSB based on my diagnostic description of the problem.

I'va also asked them to check the propellor shaft bearing per the May 2008 Service Bulletin.

They are to call me tomorrow with a report.

I had been thinking about placing a post about a sound I hear on my 2005 RL, only when the windows are open, and upon acceleration for the first few minutes of my drive, upon each acceleration. I thought it may be locust or cicadas, since they have a simmilar sound and I drive near a lot of trees. however you have described the same or similar sound I hear. I had my car at my Acura Dealer last summer, for service and described the sound they dismissed the sound, either didn't hear it or didn't want to, they said it was normal.
I am looking forward to hear the outcome of your service visit.

I got the car back, and based on the driving I've done so far, the sound seems to be gone. They did an oil change and the power steering recall as well.

Before the work was complete, I got a call from the service manager that the mechanic thought that the TSB would be a stopgap, because the grommets and washers would come loose over time (as they already had) even with a new heat shield. So, instead of taking things apart (including the tranny cover and replacing ATF fluid), they opted to modify the washers (I forget the exact words, but it was something along the lines of reshaping them to keep them from coming loose [he might have said "crush"]).

In the day I've had the car back, I haven't heard the screech during the conditions that I used to.

I had the same issue. Apparently during the power steering recall, one of the support brackets for the power steering unit were left off. This caused the sound. Dealer replaced the one of the support brackets. Issue resolved.
