You can find it on Navi through system information or by pulling the disc out of the trunk unit and seeing what it says on the label.
The sleeve of the new version has directions for some version (I think it was 4.3x on up) and if you have something before that, you need to call Alpine for a separate software update disc, implication is no charge. I do not have the sleeve with me, however, so you will have to wait until tonight.

when you go to the site to search for year and model , then go to what's in the box, for 05 Rl it states contains 2 discs the upgrade and the nav data. If you check for year 06, what's in the box states only 1 disc. Thus it can be concluded that they ship both discs for model year 05, and only the 1 for year 06

Also, as a previous person pointed out, if you select 2005, the price reverts to $185.
Looks like they want 2005 owners that have not purchased an upgrade before, to pay full price. If you have newer RL and/or have already gone through at least 1 upgrade, you get discounted price.

I have a relatively late 2006 and even so, 4.62 caused the nav system to lock up. 4.64 was the only official update disk of record...they erased any public acknowledgement of 4.62, and gave people who ordered the disc their money back if there was a failure to launch. There was version 4.63 which came with then current cars. and reportedly those mostly worked.
4.6x is the release that added major new feature functionality (such as one way streets, loss of male voice prompt, DST fix and much faster route calculation)

The new disc arrived today. When I inserted it into the reader with the car running, it went through a process of updating the software. The update took about 3 minutes and the software updated to version 2.01.01 from the previous version of 1.32.00. The data obviously updated to version 4.92 from the previous 4.31c. So, it looks like the single disc is all that is needed for both a map and software update as long as you already have a white labeled map disc. Many thanks to the person who provided the link!!!

Mine showed up yesterday. I ordered two.. one for the MDX and one for the RL. My wife did hers while I was at work..I did mine when I got home. I just stuck the disk in the reader in my trunk while it idled and the car did teh update all on its own. the whole upload took make 3-5 minutes. One nice change I noticed immediately was my street was now on the nav screen.. my commmunity is relatively new and prior to this update, my entire community was not on the map...
i also tried the command "find nearest coffee shop". I heard that was a new one..I never knew about that one..maybe it is new? part of the new updates? I don't recall that being on the m enu in my 06's orginal voice command menus... all the loccal starbucks popped up... THAT will come in handy...
i live in an area with a lot of new stuff...and there have been a handful of times that i've been in an unfamiliar area with my wife, kids...we needed something and tried to find a drugstore, or target or something lke that..a.nd b/c our disks were 2-3 years old...when we got to the address.. the store had clsoed/moved.. wha ta PITA... now with new maps, that should happen a lot less often..
for $99 it was a great find. thanks fof rposting!!!!

Some additional feedback please...
I too have an 05' RL. What was your "Software" version?
Mine is 1.64.00 and my "Database" version is 4.62
I went ahead and ordered the $99.00 upgrade version and am keeping my fingers crossed that it'll work. Please advise...

Basically, anything that is database version 4.31C or higher will allow the single disc upgrade to work.

Installed the new disc successfully from 4.31c. It did a software upgrade that took a few minutes and then it off to the races.
I see the new streets in my area. It looks like there are more categories in the Places menu. They added a Zagat search, too.
Would have been nice if the NAV traffic was able to show congestion events, and not just incidents, as the newer Acura NAVs do. And to show the road speed traffic colors regardless of magnification (like the newer ones).
But all in all, I'm satisfied with the results.
I'm wondering if I can safely turn on the automatic DST feature now?

Mine was v4.63. You should be OK with v4.62. I believe 05 had the issues for versions before 4.6x.

interesting, i tried the find nearest coffee shop and it didnt work on my 4.63. also noticed subway fell under restaurant category instead of fast food. still wondering if these small issues are worth 100 dollars.

I swear, it's the little stuff that'll drive ya nuts.
I just got my $99 disc (thanks, Board). I open it up, read the instructions, and the first step is -- naturally -- to push "open" on the face of the DVD drive. I push "open."
It doesn't open!
Now what? I'm fearful I'll break it if I pry it open; I figure I'm somehow missing something here. I checked to see if the felt-like trim piece above the top of the door was drooping into position to obstruct it from opening, and it doesn't seem to be. I pushed briefly, and I held the button down for several seconds. Nothing produced any signs of life whatsoever.
Is there an easy stupid solution for this easy stupid installer?

had a similar issue with my MDX, First the car should be on , and the open door button illuminated. If the door doesn't open after you push the button, just use your finger nail to pry open from the crease at the top in the middle of the door, it won't break, the button releases the door but sometimes it sticks a bit.

Not silly at all. The most part of Eastern Canada is on the US disk and it would also update the software of my nav system. Thanks for the thought.

This is exactly what happened with me. I had to gently pry the door open with a butter knife. Make sure your car is on, stick something small and thin like your finger nail, butter knife or flathead screw driver and gently pry it open. They tend to stick since they very rarely get opened for years.

Thanks, rmj and kss. I'll try it. (To the others, thank you for replying, but the car was running. It's part of the instructions.)

It Worked Flawlessly...
The $99 upgrade will work for you no problem. If you have 4.62 on your 05 RL, it means either you or the owner before you have already upgraded the NAV disc from the original.
Basically, anything that is database version 4.31C or higher will allow the single disc upgrade to work.

quick question
I want to purchase the 2011 disc but if for some reason it is still missing my own community, I would like to be able to return the disc. I got confirmation from the company that there is a 30 day refund policy. Ok, it's all good.
Here's my question:
So if I load the new disc and it does its update, etc. and then I decide to return it, could I just insert back the old disc (ver 4.31c) and things will be back to its original state?
Please advise, thanks!

There is a way you can do that, but I am not sure if you just put the old disc back in or if there are other things that need to be done.
Regardless, I think you will find the software upgrades from 4.31c to be worth the extra. To me, the calculations are noticeably faster, and bug fixes actually allows you to use I-66 as route into DC from the VA I-495. The DST patch is also there, but you do lose the guy's voice for navi routing info, though not for system info, such as maintenance messages.

You are right, Chas2. I think a lot has changed in our area the last 4 years. With more changes coming up, i.e., Tysons Corner area, the Intercounty Connector in MD., we might have to buy the disc every year

Same here. Got my disc last week for $99 + tax and shipping, yet I keep getting emails and now snail mail offering me the disc for $185 with FREE SHIPPING. What a bargain.
#116
which version were you using before? have you noticed any big changes/differences since the upgrade?

There is always a difference with a new map disc. (POIs, Exits, etc.).
Here is what I recommend to everyone...
If your RL is currently loaded with a disc version of 4.6x or lower....buy the update disc. I highly recommend it, even if your area had no new updates. The system updates it does (DST fix, Faster routing) are well worth the $99 upgrade.
This is your only chance at getting it at this low of a price.

i am still confusing about the order. I have 05 with original disc (maybe 4.13, i guess). On the link when i click to see what include in the box i only see 1 disc. while if i choose my specific model it show 2 discs. I read somewhere in this thread saying that i don't need second disc? is that true? thank you very much

Actually, I suppose if you have version 4.2x or below, see if some kind soul will give you his old 4.3x. Then you could order the $99 upgrade to use after first running 4.3x.
That is my guess, though I have never actually tried it since my car came with 4.31C. And by the way, I have no idea where my old 4.31C disc is....so we cannot test the theory.
