2006 RL acceleration is poor
2006 RL acceleration is poor
My vehicle has a little over 40K miles. The acceleration seems poor compared to my ex-2000 TL. I don't always use premium fuel but even when I do it still seems poor.
What is the 0-60 acceleration and torque and HP ratings for this vehicle? It seems very heavy (at least the doors do!) thx.

Luxury cars with V8 models offer more power and more low-end response, but the RL delivers solid performance. The Acura RL can accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 7 seconds, so it can compete with a BMW 530i
2000 TL Acceleration (0-60 mph): 7.7 sec.

The TL will definitely out-accelerate the RL. The RL is heavier than the TL, and you also need to figure in some HP loss due to the AWD system.
The RL can outperform the TL in cornering due to the nature of the SH-AWD system.

Have you a clocked the RL to verify it is not performing to spec? Or is just how you 'feel' the car is performing?
The RL is tuned for a very refined, smooth and progressive acceleration and near seamless tranny shift points. The throttle tip in is tuned as not to lurch forward as many cars are, which gives many cars a sensation of being faster.
This can and does create an 'illusion' that the RL is not as fast as it actually is. I am not a stoplight racer but it seems effortless leaving traffic behind me in a very unhurried manner.
The RL is not configured to be a flat out top end performance sedan. Instead it's engine, tranny, suspension and SHAWD work to produce a powerful, capable and smooth performance experience. I believe it succeeds deceivingly well in doing so.

...meaning the RLs speed can be misleading. The tuning for smoothness may decieve you into thinking it is slower than it actually is. A vehicle with sensitive throttle tip in, agressive tranny gearing and throaty exhaust note (as Infinity likes to tune vehicles) may often seem faster, though clocked times truly determine the faster.
A 3rd or 4th gen TL will be faster than an RL, true.
But not a 2nd gen non Type-S, which is what OP is comparing to.
More than likely, it is because of the softer suspension and better NVH dampening that gives it the impression that the RL is slower than the 225 HP 2nd gen TL.

My 06 RL is definitely faster than my ex 2000 TL, or at least I thought.
However I really want to get rid of my RL for something else because I don't have too much feelings for it now. Maybe an Audi S6?

A 2G TL-S is a tick faster than a 3G TL.
we are talking auto vs auto.
The RL can handle an Auto TL
6spd TL is the true problem
i agree with Tampa. the RL is NOT slow, but in some ways it feels slower than it really is. if i get on teh gas hard when i leave a stop light i have no problem pulling away from the pack..the car moves quickly and when you get into 3rd gear and are giving it gas, and VTEC kicks in, it really pulls... but it's smooth.
it truly is a smooth and refined car and the way it drives is aimed toward being relaxing, smooth, and refined...not jerky, loud, and stressful...

From a 2004 Honda News Release:
· A more compact 5-speed automatic transmission takes full advantage of the engine’s superior performance. Gear ratios have been set to deliver responsive off-the-line and acceleration performance, as well as economical cruising. Shift control is smooth and faithful to the driver’s intent, with minimal gear change shock.
The car is intentionally designed and tuned to behave this way. It was not tuned to be a TL beater in performance. The focus was refinement with understated power and maneuverability. Keep in mind, this is a Honda LEGEND and targeting the attributes of a TL is narrow minded. The TL is not a global vehicle. Also, remember the RL (2005-2008 iteration) was baked late 2003-2004 as it was launched in fall of 2004.
There are many insightful mentions as to why the car is what it is if you read the Honda New Release.
