I use premium (93) gas only. Any thoughts about using lower grade gas??

I believe that would degrade performance and eventually may cause problems.

I don't think the penny's saved will be worth it.

Want to save gas? keep RPM under 2k at all time.

Do you seriously think 93 is really 93? Gas station owners "accidentally" put the wrong octane in the 93 tanks all the time.

The dealer I bought mine from told me anything above 89 is a waste of money.

That's why the gasoline gets tested. And if you feel your car runs worse than normal you can report the gas station and it will be checked again out of cycle.

The dealer probably doesn't keep his cars long enough to notice the effects of poor grade gasoline in a hi-tech vehicle.

I personally have had 3 cars and 93 provided the best performance for me. For that alone I put the higher grade.

I've noticed a pinging going up hills when using 89/87, especially when starting out on a hill. putting in 91/93 solved it. It's about $5 difference per tank for 87 vs 91/93, hardly going to break the bank of anyone who drives this car.

In my state, 93 octane is illegal for some odd reason. I would assume 91 is "premium" enough?

The anti knock sensor should retard the timing when that happens. Is it really bad? Might want to get it checked out.

The manual specifies that 91 octane (R+M)/2 "premium" is sufficient.

R=RON, and M=MON, the two methods of calculating octane. Add them together, average them and that is what you see sold at gas stations.

The pinging was not bad, but I could hear it. I was using 93, figured I try 89 to see what would happen. After about two tanks of 89, I could hear it. I switched back to 93 and within 1 tank it was gone.

BTW, only some sunoco stations in NJ sell 91, everywhere else that I have seen, it's only 93. 91 is about 3-5 cents cheaper than 93.

93 is the new 94 for Sunoco stations. When they got rid of 94 they added 91 and pushed the prices from 94 to 93 and from 93 to 91.

Oh not again.

This is a frequent discussion, which always ends in "use what Acura tells you to". Not being harsh, just honest.

I fill up 11-13 times a month so it does add up, still....I use 91. Need that hill climbing ability.

Huh? 11-13 times/month? assuming you get 400 miles per tank, that's about 4500 miles/month or over 50k per year.

Yep, unless I'm on vacation.

Bob:

Let's put this thing to bed... Ahem...

Can you use lower octane gasoline? Yes. Will it reduce the performance of the engine? Yes. Will it damage the engine? No, sensors take care of this. Will you get the same fuel economy? NO! The engine and command computer will burn more fuel to try and make up for the performance loss.

Final result? No cost savings. Stick with Premium. End of story.

I tried an experiment in my 05: I have run 91 for many years but I had to use mid-grade once. I could not tell the difference in performance and my MPG increased. My journey is 40 miles each way and constant speed, no traffic. I have performed this test on many occasions and asked my fried to do the same. He experienced the same - no performance change and better MPG.
I know this goes against all that is written and the science behind it and I would argue against it if I didn't do the test myself but I cannot refute the findings. All I can say is try it and let us know, one tankfull will do no harm.

400 miles a fill up?? Wow ur lucky i must drive like crap cause i get like 310 per fill up. I only fill up about 4 or 5 times a month though. My girl put 89 in my car once when i let her use it and i felt the difference and asked her what she used and almost freaked out when she said regular. It performs like crap with 89 gas so 93 i a definite all the time.

I agree - there is a dif between 91 and 87 (that's premium to reg in CA)
