A/T temp high

Hi everyone,

got my RDX a month ago and took it for a longer drive a few days later.
Toronto to Quebec City is 1600 kms (approx.) back and forth.
Amazing car, amazing drive...really smooth and comfy.
On my way back it was 30C all the time, i had A/C on and drove 5 hours straight with no breaks 120km/h on cruise control. At that point i got that signal on the dashboard saying my A/T temp is high.....it was on but was not blinking....when i opened my manual it said that if it blinks i have to get my car to the dealer right away but it didnt mention anything when the light is on steady.

I pulled over at the gas station opened a hood for 45 mins and everything was ok for the rest of the way and i never had that come up since.
When i talked to some new MDX owners at the gas station they recommended to just relax and let the new car cool down. They recommended not to have the new car driven for so long .
The assuring thing was that one of those guys was a technician at one of the Acura dealerships and he was driving a new TSX (i was really lucky) told me that the oil in the engine got warmer than usual temp. so the sensors have noticed that and notified me.....

has somebody else had similar issue or situation like this?

your thoughts on this if this is something that should be looked at ?

markonibre...I never experienced such an issue. I drove about 450km the day I picked up the RDX and it did not exhibit such a behavior on that day nor since then. I suspect that as the tech said, it was just a fluke. I am sure it will be fine

Your transmission temps should not be that warm especially if you are driving (air flow over the rad) and you are not towing anything.

Bring it into the dealership and let them investigate it. It may have a stored code for them to pull. Also check the transmission dipstick (I hope honda kept one in the new rdx...should be a yellow tip) to see if the oil has discolored in anyway. It should be red/pink and level should be checked after a drive/warmup and keep the car running when you pull the dipstick.

I am familiar with sherway. Went to see the 2012 and 2013 rdx there and was not impressed by the salesman... Very shady approach and lame sales tatics..

Wouldnt bother talking about price negotiation, said maybe he could throw in a couple of accessories.. Wouldnt even give me the paper quote to take with me because the copier machine broke just as he copied my driver license for the test drive. (bulllllshhhittt)

Went to acura east and sales people were much better. Totally straight up.. I asked for $1500 in accessories and got it no problem. They worked to get my colour (white) in a week, while sherway was saying 2 months maybe.

Gave me a clean quote no problem as well. Let me negotiate with gm also.

Sherway = terrible imo

what did you end up paying Cablerat? My Dad bought a TSX through Acura East - said they were great and really worked to get the deal done and get the colour he wanted fast.

I am looking at an RDX.

I paid full price on the RDX Tech, but negotiated about $1,500 in accessories. Ask for Joe Koichopolos in Sales!

Tell him Khosh (white RDX) said I should talk to you! Nice guy, works to get you everything you want and doesn't get all lame ass car salesmen..

Thanks - I'm looking to see what other Canadians have paid - seems the US dealers are giving great deals, so I was hoping the same for us too!

The vehicle price I paid was technically MSRP, but got about 1500 more than the high price on the canadian black book on my trade. I view it all as a package deal, so I believe I got a reasonable deal, but tough to really put a number to it. I bought the day after the first demo arrived at the dealer (and no inventory), so i didn't have a great deal of leverage.

i knew it they are not good at Sherway.
Unfortunatelly when i went to Oakville/Mississauga they were worse.
if i only spoke to someone else before i bought it.....
Unfortunately i didnt get any accessories at all....
My negotiation was very long and tough.
i asked to pay the full price but to get some accessories (which i thought it was fair). I dont think i was ever denied that quickly. And the way i was denied was rude for me so i decided to negotiate the price down and left.
Car cost Canada is saying that they are getting RDX for 38k so that means that they earn 7k.
after couple of days going back and forth with the sales guy, i got my tech. RDX for 41k and some floor mats
think this was a good deal.....
but honestly if the sales guys were ok (he doesnt have to be really good and nice to me) and threw some accessories at me i would have paid the full price.

Was that 41K with or without delivery fee?

The car cost Canada report I have says the invoice on the tech model is $40,471 plus freight of $1,895?

Where did you get $38k from?

That's what comes up for me as the non-tech model - which matches Acura's $40,990 MSRP on their website.

went to a dealership to check that small issue out with A/T turning on.....they looked at it and said that it was nothing.....apparently it was saying that i was driving too long on too high rpms. So as a new car it was notifying me with a warning signal to slow down. Honestly i had it on my cruise for at least 2-3 hours between 100-120kms and when that light went on i was standing in traffic for at least an hour on 33C.....

i will go to a different dealership to make sure that this story sticks...its a pitty i didnt take a number from that tech. guy from the gas station that was there with me....

i will post the comment from a different dealer when i get back....

Not sure what other thoughts you are looking for here - Dollar parity has little impact on pricing, clearly. Ask a dealer / any company operating with like products in Canada and they'll tell you that overhead costs such as Freight, Distribution, General Wage management (from sales to corporate,) blah, blah drive the cost up..

I'd imagine that buying a US model would have sufficient duty charges to negate any real benefit as well.

At least we get the Pearl White on Ebony...

I was curious as to why his car cost report was different than mine. That's all. Also was the 41k you paid including freight?

Don't y'all also pay a GST (Goods & Services Tax) that is built right into the price?

Some provinces charge GST and PST separately - others charge HST, which is combined GST and PST It is not included in the price and is different for every province. Funny thing - when HST first was being talked about in our province it was to be called BST (blended sales tax). It was changed to HST (harmonized sales tax) presumably when people started calling BST by another "BS" name.

I still can't believe they gave you $3k off Moro for the tech package. Where did you buy and who did you deal with? Thanks!

I bought a new honda and was driving it 8+hours from Ontario to Massachusetts and asked about 'breaking in' considerations. The advisor told me just don't drive it at the same speed for too long. Maybe putting your RDX on cruise for a long period is related to this advice.

The new vehicle "break in" info. is in your Manual.
He was correct. Extended driving distance at one steady speed is not suggested for proper break in. So, the Cruise Cont. set, would generally not be a good idea.

Every new car I've purchased has always had a highly suggested list of "break in..do's and don'ts"....and I've purchased 30 new ones now. At least in the States. Don't know about Canada....but, I'd guess it's there also!!

Take care.

just came back from another dealer regarding this issue 'A/T temp high'.... apparently my transmission oil level has been too high, over the max, which was causing this sensor to go off......they lowered it to the right level and they said this should work.....have to keep an eye on it if it happens.....
just an FYI for all of you

After about 300mi on my 2010 MDX, the later part mostly on adaptive cruise at about 75-80mph on highways going up and down, I got this A/T temp high warning. Stopped for about 1/2 hr and proceeded. Got the warning 2 more times and had to take a break for each to complete the remaining of the 700mi trip. It was on but was not blinking. This bothered me a lot. On the return trip, I drove it mostly 65-74mph, did not cross 75mph, did not get any warning. sigh.
