Strange sound from 2013 RDX
Strange sound from 2013 RDX
I recently started to hear a rhythmic unfamiliar noise that seems to be coming from the wheels (or brakes) of my 2018 RDX. The sound stops when i press the brake pedal and comes back when i release it. However to my ear it doesn't sound like the brake pad wear indicator. It doesn't happen every time i drive, but happens frequently enough to keep me wondering. Does anyone recognize this sound? I attached an mp3 file of the noise. Please let me know what you think. Thanks.
I have not heard either of the noises in that sample. Is the issue the pretty-much-constant higher-pitched "science-fictiony" sound, or the more mechanical sound that sort of sounds like the the pressing and releasing something? That second sound is first heard at 10 seconds, then at 14. I'm guessing that the second sound is the application of the brake pedal itself, but I'm asking just to be sure.

Yes, the issue is the high-pitched "science-fictiony" sound, which is present throughout the sound clip. I never pressed the brake pedal while recording, other noises are just noises caused by imperfections on the road.

Clearly the sound is rotational; it increases in speed as you increase the car's speed. It is dampened when you hit the brakes and returns when you release them, so it is not the brake pad indicator, as you said. It certainly sounds to me as if it is metal sound. I would try putting it on jack stands and seeing if you can spin the wheel by hand fast enough to produce the sound; I would also try removing the wheel(s) and inspecting everything; you may see or hear a sign of wear that shouldn't exist. I once had a problem with a thin metal 'sheath' designed to protect the disk, which had gotten bent, and was contacting the disk at speed. It had gotten bent just a quarter of an inch, but that was enough. (That was not on my RDX, though.)
Wish I could be more help. Do let us know what you find when you figure it out!

I don't always make new friends, but when I do, I like to make them using parts from old ones.
