Rust Muffler Connection

Hi all,

I was installing the tow hitch and noticed that my 1.5 week old 2016 RDX's muffler connection is rusting(?).
Is this normal? Should I use Rustoleum to prevent further rusting?

Thanks,
N

Considering the temperatures exhausts can get to, I wouldn't use anything..

exhaust flange rust

the entire exhaust system on my 2003 tls , with the exception of the "flange" connectors, is made out of some type of stainless steel. the pipes themselves and the mufflers are unlikely to rust out, as on my car, the mufflers and pipes have zero rust. the flanges however do rust. it took the flanges on my car, the two on the rear only, which connect the pipe B to the rear mufflers 13 years and 220,000 miles to rust out and require replacement. in the northeast and any states which regularly use "road salt" to treat their roads during winter months, corrosion of the flanges is inevitable and will be accelerated in proportion the amount of salt and frequency of exposure. since the exhaust system on my car, hopefully, will never need to be removed in individual pieces, I simply cut out the rusted connector flanges and replaced them with a "sleeve" purchased on Ebay tor $5.00, the Eastwood company offers:

High Temperature Manifold Coating

Application & Guidelines

Achieve the same superior manifold protection as Eastwood's high temperature brush-on coatings with the ease and simplicity of an aerosol can. Just like its brush-on counterparts, the aerosol version offers protection up to 1200 ° F and cures to a hard and durable finish that will last for years. Easily apply at home without the worry of sending parts out for coating that may be lost or damaged in shipment.

which I suppose would work well on the flanges as I doubt they would ever reach 1200 deg., and should prevent this condition altogether.

Yes you could. That's what I did. But Rustoleum wouldn't last as the high temps would burn the paint. Instead, I bought high-temp spray paint from Walmart and so far after several months the paint is still good.
I've also painted most of the exposed pipes to prevent the rust from road salt.
