Oil pump seal leak
Oil pump seal leak
Hi All
Today I took my 2017 RDX for an oil change as the dealership. While the car was lifted, the technician pointed out to me a leak coming for the oil pump seal - it is adjacent to the drive shaft going to the right wheel. They wrote down - "Oil pump seal is leaking."
Dealership quoted in $2300 for the repair and would give me a loaner as it is a big job.
The car has 122k miles on it and the major time belt combo service was done at 100k a couple of years ago.
I took the car of another mechanic - he quickly spotted the leak... he said it is a $300 job. He said the jobs is a couple of hours - he would take of the right wheel, remove the shaft to get into the area.
Anyways he cleaned of the area of me and said bring it back in week and to check how much it leaks.
So I'm really confused... is this oil pump seal replacement an intensive job? Can it be done from under the car ?
I google search symptoms for this and for a few years I do notice from time to time a slight oil burn odor while parking in my garage. However I do not have any oil marks on the garage floor.
Thanks!

Replacing the pump seal (also known as the crankshaft seal) might take up to three hours; however, the gasket—which is located on the opposite side of the pump—is a common source of leaks. Consequently, you will need to remove the entire timing assembly and the oil pan in order to detach the pump and replace the gasket. According to the service manual, this takes approximately six hours, though on some models, the process may take up to eight hours.
