First Oil Change Mileage/Code

Took a quick look and didn't see a specific thread for this so forgive if there is one. What was the mileage for your RDX's first oil change, MID reading 15%, as well as the code?

The reason I'm asking is my mileage is just over 7500 and I'm still showing 30% left on the oil. Driving habits do make a difference but I was curious as to others experience.

More hwy longer OCI (7500-8500+mi). more city shorter OCI (4000-6000 mi).

your first code will most likely be A1. and then alternate with a B something for subsequent codes. at the rate your car is going, you will get a 2 around 24-25k, it might code with the 3 but the 3 may show up at the 30k+ code along with the A/B. if you have AWD, you will get the 6 around 15k and then around 40k. it's not an exact mileage, it's a +/- 2k mi or so.

RDX/MDX/TL...MID works all the same. I've had my TL since new and have every code recorded that the car has given. I've had my MDX for the last couple of yrs, and have the codes given since i've owned it thus far.

Just wanted to chime in, I went over 6,000 and am still at 40%. My longest daily commute is 5 miles and never gets about 45 mph so that probably has a lot to do with it.

Is the first oil change covered by Acura, even if you don't take it to the dealer you bought from?

^^no. usually the "home" dealer the car was purchased from may give you the first oil change for free (depends on the dealer...has nothing to do with acura).

my dealer gives the first oil change for free for new car purchases.

My first code hit at about 7,500, I am at 20% now so it looks to be about every 7500 for my usage. My old Honda Odyssey was almost the same interval. RDX will be 6 months old end of August.

At 8,414 miles I finally hit my very first service...B-1. Not sure why, but all 3 of my Acuras (2007 RDX, 2010 TSX, 2013 RDX) had B-1 as the very first service. Doubt it's driving style as I lean more toward the gentle end. The 2007 hit 5000 miles - 7 months old, the 2010 hit 7,500 miles - 10 months old, and the 2013 is over a year old although I've driven it 6 months but was new at purchase. Environmental factors???

My RDX will be one year in service about 9/26. Has 6300+ miles now and the oil monitor just dropped to 30%. No codes but I'm taking it in prior to the one year mark for the oil change, tire rotation and the transmission recall.

Transmission recall? Is that only for the 2013s?

Yes some 2013's but it is not really a transmission recall. It is to replace a small part in the shift lever mechanism which could fail, primarily in cold weather.

Correct. I should have said shift lever instead of transmission. Just got a call from Acura a couple of days ago to schedule the recall fix. I've been waiting for my first oil change to get it all done at once since I knew I'd be getting it done before freezing weather comes.

Oil change intervals correlate directly to how much city vs highway driving one does. I do 75% city and average about 5k before it drops to 10%. With my MDX it was 75% highway and got close to 8-10k between maintenance minder telling me it was time.

Well, heck, kids...I took the easy way out on my lease. Bought the 36k service package(at a reasonable discount, I believe...especially since I have the dealer do all service within the warranty period) and will show up each 6k for scheduled visits. Even though we have summer for 8 months a year around here, I like the idea of new oil/filter twice a year. So, that's working out about right...second visit mileage-wise will be after 13 months and just in time for our 'cooler' fall/winter.

Back in the old days, mechanics cautioned those who put under 5 miles per trip on their vehicles...saying the fluids don't reach full operating temps in such short trips. If those short trips add up to only 5-6k miles/year, they would still advise an oil change twice a year. Things may be very different with syn or blend oils, but that line of reasoning seemed prudent to me in places that see freezing temps in the winter and +- 100F in the summer. Just a thought from an old guy.

Only doing 5 mi trips isn't good for the vehicle unless it has time to get up to temp. I'd take it out at least every other week for a longer drive. When the engine gets up to temp and stays up, it gets any moisture out of the oil system that may have collected, and also gets any fuel out as well.

I believe the manual says to change it at least once a year even if the indicator has not popped up yet. We drive only 5K-6K mi/yr. so that's about it for our cars. I do use Mobil 1, tho, and even on the short trips it gets warmed up to temp...doesn't take long when it's 100F+ outside.

5000 miles divided by 365 is almost 14 miles a trip IF driven every day OR it could be 4 trips less than 4 miles each per day. Big difference in wear and tear on the engine. I only have 6300 miles on mine in about a year but I would say my average trip is about 20 miles because I tend to group errands into one round trip. I also have a p/u that I drive to the lake so there can periods of 4-5 days where the RDX is not even started. Then I may do a 90 mile round trip. I guess that's why my cumulative MPG for those 6300 miles is sitting on 24.9.
Totally agree though that if most trips are of the 4-6 miles type that oil changes should be done more frequently. For my type of driving I'll stick to the one year and/or the oil monitor, whichever comes first.
