Collision Mitigation Braking System - Yay or Nay?
Collision Mitigation Braking System - Yay or Nay?
I am currently looking to buy either a '16 or '17 RDX, mainly for a vehicle for my GF to use and commute. I am just wondering if I should brother to get the trim with the Collision Mitigation Braking System or not because it's alot harder to find and more expensive, but it could be safer for my GF to drive? After some research I can see it potentially create some problems and issues (Sudden braking, sensor mal-functions, etc.). Just like to see if any of you guys got any input on this before I make the decision.
Regards,
Regards,
I'm not the biggest fan of it on any vehicles. It doesn't work well at night for most cars in general, and I would think that it could lead to more problems due to electrical errors and such.

Along the same lines as the other posters, here is another data point: We have a 2016 Advance model and in the 4+ years (and 50K miles) we have had it, the CMBS has never fully activated. We have definitely seen the "BRAKE" signal come up in the instrument cluster but the brakes have never been automatically applied. If you are paying attention, it's not needed, but with that said - it only takes one time to not be paying attention or another driver doing something unexpected where having this system may make a difference.
If we were in the market today, I would likely look for a model that has some of these newer safety features - YMMV. $0.02

CMBS isn't designed to automatically stop the Acura to prevent a collision; but, start the braking process to REDUCE the severity of an impact. It can stop short of an impact; but, it could also end in a collision at a lower speed compared to without CMBS. It is a 24/7/365 safety feature that is always on to aid the driver. I would never purchase another vehicle without AcuraWatch or whatever version from other car makers. Accidents do happen even if you are paying attention. If paying attention is all you needed, then there wouldn't be a need for car insurance, child seats, or seat belts.
If you look away for 1 second at +55 mph can mean you traveled +80 feet. LKAS will keep you in your lane, ACC (if used) will ensure you keep the proper distance between vehicles, and CMBS will start the braking process if you are unable. Nobody on this planet stares 100% at the road when they drive.

If you can find one.....in your budget, buy it. I had difficulty finding an Advance or Tech with the safety package in my price range and the mileage I felt comfortable buying. After searching for months, I bought a 2017 Tech with 40k miles.
I agree that being an attentive driver is the best safety feature. But unfortunately not all drivers are attentive or good drivers so any safety features you can get is a plus.
Quite honestly, I would focus on getting the newest RDX (Tech or Advance) that you can afford with the least amount of miles. Make sure you know the car's history.

There is a degree of that but I also had trouble following Brown13's post. I think I get it now - his insurance on a $20K more expensive vehicle went down. I originally read it as his insurance went down by $20,000 and that was a typo I was trying to clarify.
That cheap feeling R/C car doesnt do it for most drivers. Men still naturally enjoy firey explosions under thier foot that they control.

It went down and it was more than your RDX? $200? $2000?
