Air filters

2013 RDX. Hitting the 1yr mark and ~13k miles.

Was in for an oil-change today. Dealer recommended the engine air filter and cabin air filter be replaced to the tune of $100. The tech said this was typical / not unusual for 13K.

I declined, thinking 13K doesn't really seem like it should already need both of those.

Any thoughts? I have to bring it back for a recall anyway, so if it's likely they really do need to be replaced, I can go ahead and have it done.

You can take a look at both and decide for yourself. Your cabin filter is likely ripe to be changed. It can get pretty gross over 12 months. It should cost less than $20.

OK, thanks. Had a 2005 Outback XT Limited previously and the guidance for the cabin filter was 1-2yrs depending on air conditions. Engine air filter replacement interval was 30K.

This is our first Acura. We bought it 9/15/12 and drove it quite a bit for the first ~8-months. Especially over the winter. Averaging about 12K miles/yr. Not many miles on the RDX the last 5 months since we bought a 2013 VW SportWagen TDI. Driving it at the rate of 24K miles/yr.

With winter right around the corner, we're getting ready to swap back to the RDX as the primary vehicle.

My RDX just turned 30,000 miles and the MID says change air filter. The car is only about 16 months old. It is also asking to change the transmission and transfer case fluid.

Haven't heard anything from the MID. This was just the guidance from the technical advisor.

I did find this:

"6 Speed Automatic AWD - Recommended service:

Replace air cleaner element*2
Replace dust and pollen filter*3
Inspect drive belt
*2: If you drive in dusty conditions, replace air cleaner element every 15,000 miles (24,000 km).
*3: If you drive primarily in urban areas that have high concentrations of soot in the air from industry and from diesel-powered vehicles, replace the dust and pollen filter every 15,000 miles (24,000 km).
Independent of Maintenance Minder information, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.
Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).
Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy."

I've always replaced the cabin filter myself annually, it's cheap and easy. My wife is allergic to everything so I use the Puralator BreatheEASY filters. http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/...irfilters.aspx

the air filter is easy to look at and determine whether or not it needs to be changed.
I wouldnt change it if its clean and spotless.
