2016 RDX Steel Rims vs OEM Winter

Hey Guys,

My local dealership stated that if I want winter tires, I'm going to have to put the same RDX Alloy Wheels on (OEM) and I can't go 17 inch steel. I called two other dealerships who say the 17 inch is the way to go. My dealership stated that Acura Engineering insists we do not go to 17 and refuses. I called 1-888-9-acura-9 and they confirmed not to go 17 inch Honda Steel or any steel and you need to go to the OEM Alloy or it voids warranty. Thoughts? Anyone hear different?

Voids what warranty?

It's seems pretty well established that anything Tire Rack lists for any car is OK for that car.

Well, I guess that I should keep the email I received from the sales manager proposing 17in steel rims just in case I have warranty issues.....

Honestly, I don't think that they would have grounds to deny warranty just because you have tires that have less difference in size than a worn out tire compared to the original new 18in tire

Get the right size tire and the diameter of the whole works is virtually identical.

I'm not sure. I mean they are seeing it has something to do with the suspension and mounting. Dealers may sell but it voids the factory warranty and the dealer then assumes all warranty repair if something goes wrong. No one has heard about this?

My Dealer sold me a winter tire package that came with 17 inch steel rims. No mention of voiding any warranty. So i have to assume that there is no issue for my 2016 RDX.
Cant think if any reason that they would be.

I think the dealership is just making a blanket statement of "if any aftermarket part causes an warranty issue and that issue can be contributed to that exact part; Acura may not honor the warranty repair". Just not sure how a steel winter wheel could cause an issue unless you don't get the 17 inch tire diameter correct and it might effect the safety features?

This is one of those rare instances where the Magnusson Moss Act would apply. The steel wheel is a direct replacement for a wheel sold by Acura. The weight and offset are approximately correct and if the tire is properly then the rolling diameter is correct as well. Accordingly, the manufacturer would have to show that there is a good chance that the wheel caused the problem.

I see no way that they can do this - any small claims court would laugh Acura right out of court.

Issues can be expected with wildly different offsets, weights and odd tire sizes.

Isn't there a donut available as an option for a spare?

What size is that?

My Acura dealer sells CRV steel wheels for all or most Acura's, I have a set of rims that were on a TSX then on my RDX (different tires of course).

The right tire for snows is recommended as 17". Don't see why it matters if they are steel. FWIW, I bought after market 17" alloy winter rims from the dealer.

I'm not a mechanic, but there might be a disk heating problem with unventilated steel wheels compared to ventilated alloy. I do want plan to buy mounted winter tires, and steel wheels would save a lot of $. Just want to make sure they won't cause a problem

Good point however I don't think steel wheels are any less 'ventilated' compared to alloy wheels. Virtually every car has disk brakes these days and I haven't heard about steel wheels causing any heating issues. Perhaps if were an F1/track car, there would be heat issues.
