2013 Acura RDX engine shuts off when at idling/trafic/red lights/stop signs

Hi there,

2013 Acura RDX

I have this issue for past 4 months. Engine shuts off at stop signs, in trafic , at red light, when idling OR engine rpm jumps to 1500-2000 on its own. Happens 1-5 times a day and no codes

VIDEO 1 — rpm jumps to 400-500 and engine shuts off. Car works for few seconds, rpm stay at 600-700 and then shuts off when i put in drive

VIDEO 2 — rpm ramdomly jumps to 1500-2000 and then go back to normal

Anyone have some expierence with this???

Whats already done for past 4 months and it did not help:

-new throttle body
-new idle sensor
-new maf sensor
-new pcv valve
-new egr valve
-new alternator
-new filters
-no vacuum leaks
-new spark plugs
-checked all grounds and electrical harness (someone recommended it from this forum before)

Anyone have some thoughts? Im wondering if someone had same issue? In general what might be left is o2 sensors, coils, fuel pump, fuel injectors, transmision problem. But I cant throw money at every possible potential reason of this issue

I had the same problem. You said that you’re from Seattle WA, but you’re from Russia.

Hey! Good afternoon. I live in Seattle, WA for past 9 years. But Im originally from Ukraine.

All parts are OEM. I bought them from Acura dealership in Tacoma, WA. Its called Hinshaw Acura. To be more clear Everything is OEM, Except the spark plugs. Same brand NGK, but I bough them not from dealership, I bough them from NGK dealer from amazon. Spark plugs at dealership are too overpriced, I bellieve I got same one as oem for 3 times cheaper. So basically I used all oem parts and it did not help to fix issues.

How did you fix this problem on your acura? What was the issue?

Im general, according to my research, there are some options left like o2 sensors, coils, fuel pump, fuel injectors, transmission problems. Thats everythjng what I can find online that might cause this issue

what was your problem? How did you fixed?

I've been in Delaware for 11 years, and when people ask me where I'm from, I say Ukraine, not Delaware. I don't like liars.

Get new plugs from Rock Auto, you might have gotten counterfeit ones from Amazon

This thread is almost full of Slavs, including myself, though, I'm told I'm removed by a least one generation.

Anyway, I see your extensive 'parts cannon' list up there, so I assume the OBD system is not throwing any specific codes in the form of clues?

Therefore, keeping in mind your random rpm surges & subsequent engine shut downs, have you given thought to the possibility that the #1; 17800-T0A-A81 accelerator pedal assembly below may be faulty / malfunctioning as a result of 10+ years of humid environment exposure to your PNW location?
Pedal - 2013 Acura RDX 5 Door BASE (2WD) KA 6AT (acurapartswarehouse.com)

There is an electrical connector, so I was just thinking may be something is worn out / shorting electronically within the pedal assembly that may be causing your surge / shut down problems? Just throwing that out there as it appears your are 'fishing' for suggestions.
Good Luck!

Hey! i just checked that plug. It looks good. And its located inside cabin so its dry all the time. I never had snow or water inside the cabin at pedals level

but thanks for suggestions!!!

Hi!

I have a feeling if pedal sensor is going bad then it will only cause rpm jump high on its own. I am not sure about engine stalling.

what do you think? Bad pedal sensor might cause both? Stalling and high rpm jumps?

one more question, fuel injectors is a possibility? They might cause engine stalling and rpm to jump. The problem i have this issue already for 4 months and acura still doesnt throw a code

It is difficult to really know without a DTC; however, if you went through the expense of installing a new OEM throttle body, which is $218+, perhaps there is something 'getting lazy' within your current pedal sensor assembly?

After all, it is specific item that interacts directly to 'talk' with your new TB.

The two I provided above are from the same vendor and the cheapest I could find to 'roll the dice' on, should you decide.
It's your call, good luck.

Are your battery/alternator in good shape? I would also remove and re-insert all fuses and relays just to make sure all electrical contacts are good.

You did not indicate if your car loosing power/has not enough power under heavy load, like high-speed highway driving and making a pass. If it does have all the power, then you fuel system must be in good shape and you should focus on electrical issues. My 5c.

Might check the ignition relay , under the hood. There may be another relay in the fuse box area that is the same as the ignition relay. Pull the relays and swap them with one another and see if that might be the culprit. No cost in doing so.
Had ignition relay die on me once and I swapped it with the one for the air conditioner and got home afterwards.
