Problem with 1st gear on 5AT?

I am on my Second transmission and recently I started to have a new problem which I think is transmission related, but very different from the problem I had on the original transmission.

When my car down shifts to 1st under hard acceleration, the RPMs raise normally until I get near 4.5-5k RPM it seems like something slips and the RPMs jump from 5k almost to redline for a second but you can feel the car slowing down, then the revs go back down and then a second later it drops into second gear and you get jerked back into your seat. It all happens within like 2 seconds but its a pretty violent action with engine revs going up then down then up then shifts.

This doesn't happen all of the time esp when I am accelerating from a stop (it hardly ever happens then). It is most reproducible when I am going around 10mph and stomp on the gas causing the downshift to 1st.

I read parts of the new recall (am I going to get something in the mail for this?) but I wasn't sure if this issue is related.

Anyone else have similar problems?

Sounds like your first gear clutch pack is going away.... You’re describing "flare."

If the problem was happening in all gears, there could be a problem with the torque converter, but, since it is isolated to 1st gear, you probably need to concentrate on being able to duplicate the problem with 1st at the dealer.

The revs shouldn't just "climb" in 1st at high revs. IMO, that’s not normal.

The torque converter can lock and unlock, but I've never seen it happen at the RPM in 1st or 2nd gear when at high RPMS.

I have seen in happen in 3rd going up hills -- that is something that you don't worry about. The converter can "unlock" to move the car onto the torque peak (I have headers and CAI).

So, see about being able to duplicate it, and get to the dealer.

YMMV
