Recommend me some light-weight wheels for drag racing...

Last season, I was cutting 2.23x to 2.28x 60' times on stock wheels and tires on H&R Sport springs.

Between the seasons, I upgraded my suspension to Tein SS, Rotora BBK, Enkei ZR2's wrapped in Toyo T1-S tires in 235/40/18 size.

With the Tein SS, I set the rear at the stiffest setting for better load transfer and the tires are providing much better traction; no more wheel-hops, just a bit of wheelspin and take off.

But my 60' times are still in the high 2.2xx range. The wheels weight 19.6 pounds each and the tires weight 23 pounds each. It is lighter than the stock setup, but the larger diameter increased the inertia, and the rotors are like 2 inches wider than stock. So the rolling mass may have increased in weight, but actually increased in inertia. Taking off the brakes is not an option since I need them for road racing, so the only area I can compensate for is the wheels by going smaller and lighter.

So now I'm looking to get a pair of lighweight 16" wheels and drag radials for the drag strip. I was looking at Center Line Wheels RPM, but they don't make 16" and the 15" will be too small to clear the larger calipers.

Does anybody have any recommendations on some lightweight wheels?

Centerline Storms or if you can find some the Impulse's are even lighter.

SSR Comps are good. The 17X8 also clear the BBK. As well as the 18X8

16's will also work better and be lighter, but its hard to find a narrow 16" drag radial. Nitto used to make a 225/50/16 dr, but i'm pretty sure they discontinued it.

Its discontinued, but its still available. Give Nicole a ring at 800-345-8671 x5

She's who I bought them from yesterday for $100/piece. They look almost identical to the Storms, just a tiny bit skinnier spoke & they are a little lighter.

your doing good with a 2.23 60' Its hard to beat that unless you are running drag radials or even slicks.

Not with an auto, some guys have gone 2.1's

2.23 would be very decent for a 6 speed, which is what I was pulling with the DR's.

FWIW: You need to practice more. Lightweight wheels will actually make it harder to hook up IMO. My best 60' ever was a 2.000 and that was with the S/C'er in my automatic. I was running on stock wheels, PZero NERO M+S 225/45/17, H&R sports, Tokico HP struts.

With bald tires and stock rims on my S/C'ed 6-speed I cut a 2.2 60' on my first time out. With new Falken Ziex 512's in 235/45 I can hook up in 1st gear from 2500 on if I start out easy. I'm trying to go to the track tomorrow to see what I can put down.

Yes, but have you suspension mods done, I dont. The weight transfer is pretty horrible with stock springs/shocks. Plus, mine wheelhops really bad even with the dr's, and I have no desire to abuse the drivetrain. So I had to launch nice & easy (like 2k rpm with some clutch work) to get it off the line clean.

I wasn't comparing to you... I realize you are on stock suspension. However you do have DRs... I have all season tires and a lot more horsepower/torque. We'll find out tomorrow hopefully

What, maybe like 5-10hp like that would make a difference.

BTW how do you like the 512's, they are one of the tires I'm considering for all season use.

5-10hp? You think that's all I have on you? Notice the avatar.

I'm easily pushing 400 crank hp

I like the 512s a lot. They aren't the best on the market, but I believe they are the best on the market below $100/ea

Are they decent in the rain? I dont know whether I should just get some aggressive summer tires and then a separate set of winter only tires.

sarcasm = red text... remember that

They're pretty good in the rain... the directional tread helps against hydroplaning
