Tranny on it's last leg?

I went to drive the car today and the transmission sounded like a supercharger on the car. Once it warmed up the sound got much quieter but you can still hear it. The car shifts perfectly fine though. I haven't flushed for about 15K miles so I'll try that first. This is the 2nd tranny - the first one died at 62K and this one now has 130K on it so it's probably time. Any suggestions on additives I can put in during the flush to quiet the sound in case I decide to trade it in? I do want top dollar afterall.

It was replaced in March 2003. I had the injection kit added in July 2004 at 96K, i.e. after 34K miles on the new tranny.

Just great. The weird thing is I opened it up pretty hard getting on the freeway and now the sound is totally gone. I'll check it in the morning to see if it's back.

How much does it cost for a replacement tranny? I'd probably just get another car I guess. I test drove the TSX V6 and I really liked it other than the cheap-ass center console.

totally agree, I had 2010 TSX v6 as a loaner car, I liked it from outside, but the dash looks cheap, v6 would cost $31+, and the engine does not feel that powerful. I think its too much, TL has better quality but it looks ugly from outside. I was also surprised that gas tank lid can be opened without lock.

I agree with you on both accounts. I can never find a car I truly love. Of all the cars I test drove, I probably liked the G37 the most but the engine noise is annoying, the rear seats have almost no room whatsoever, and the navigation is a pain in the ass. Who would buy a nav if they couldn't add a destinatin while driving. There's such a thing as a passenger for crying out loud!

I think I am still in love with my CL-S. Maybe I should just drive her until the tranny goes and just replace it.

Get an Odyssey tranny.

And I love the TSX, but the V6 isnt available with a 6MT

The gas lid can be opened without a lock? Do you just push on one side and it flips open?

This morning on the way to work I noticed the sound is still there but it is nowhere close to being as loud as yesterday morning. Decisions, decisions, decisions .......

I don't mind that the TSX V6 is only automatic. My second car is a manual corvette so I get my thrills from there.

This. Some argue that putting a few thousand into this car for an Odyssey transmission isn't worth it, but I would much rather do that then look into another car. I'm too attached to the CL.

I'm attached too. I have two co-workers chomping at the bits to buy it off me though. I have even been honest about the potential tranny isue and they still want it!

yep, I felt like an idiot at gas station looking for a button to pop the lid from inside the car, turns out it has no lock, just push it , and it pops out. That is cheap for $31K car, let alone cheap materials for a dashboard.

Lol, Benzes have the same thing. I was driving an S500 and searched for the damn button. The gas station attendant said dont worry and popped it open. Turns out its the same style.

And I don't have an issue with the dashboard. I actually prefer the interior on the TSX compared to the CL.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a Bay Area shop to swap out the tranny when it finally kills over? I have used W&K Automotive in Santa Clara before and been happy with the service.

I guess I could call them.

Yep, that is exactly what happened. Why in the world would the VSA light come on? I understand the engine light, but why the VSA? It would reset when I shut off the car.

Totally worth it seeing as rebuilding a CL tranny will cost about $2k and its not guaranteed to hold up.

Things must be more expensive out here in California. For a dealer replacement it is $4500 and for a Specialty remanufctured replacement it is around $3700. I haven't looked into used yet like you guys suggest. Does anyone have recommendations for the Bay Area on used transmissions?

Im talking rebuilt from an independent shop. A full replacement at the dealer will still run you about $4k here.

what is exactly "specialty remanufacuted"? Supposedly Acura made updates to replacement units after 2005, so they should hold better. if its only $800, I'd go with Acura, you will also get 3 year/36K miles warranty on it

Specialty is a local transmission shop. I Agree with your $800 statement.

I've just started looking into an independant shop rebuild. Hopefully I'll have some comparison quotes soon.

did acura quote of 4500 include new ECU ($1000 value). Independent shops don't replace ECU, Acura forces you to replace ECU (make you pay for it). New ECU has different shift logic to reduce strain on some of the weaker parts of the transmission. If 4500 includes new ECU, and indepdent shop wants 3700 without ECU, I think its a no brainier to go with Acura.

My ECU was replaced when the first tranny went out when it was under warranty. The dealer indicated I do not need the ECU replaced this time.

I got a quote from Almaden Valley Transmission down the street from my house. They will do a rebuild for $1500 plus additional if any of the hard gears need to be replaced. It comes with a 2Yr/24,000 mile warranty as well. I think I am sold. Thanks everyone.
