Thermostat housing gunk

Hello all, new member here. Have an 2001 CL Type S that I am having coolant temp problems with. After a lot of reading(seems to be a very common prob) I changed the temp sensor and am now changing the thermostat. Top hose was much hotter than the bottom, so I figure this is the problem. After taking off the housing, I see a lot of build-up, yellowish hard substance in the housing, which is worrying me a lot. Coolant was changed out very recently. Any ideas?

Replace thermostat if one hose is always hotter than the other. Plain and simple. Seems like the thermostat is staying closed, or not opening at the right time. Either way. Change it out.

Did change the thermo, thanks, what was worrying me is the build-up in the housing. Not sure if the pic I put in the post is visible for others?

lol, does kind of look like egg yolk, doesn't it? But no sign of it on the cap, or anywhere else I can readily see. Just worried about the water pumps' condition now.

Unfortunately, no, I know very little of the cars' history. Bought it from a small dealer who picked it up at auction. Intended it to be a short ownership, just to get me through a time when I had little money for something newer(got it pretty cheap), then I fell in love w/it . So now I'm doing everything I can to extend its' life. 185k miles and running great. Has a cold-air intake and GReddy exhaust, new motor mounts, so someone put a bit of work into it.

your heading towards the suggested 210k timing belt service and it is suggested that the water pump be replaced then. If your not leaking antifreeze or running hot, i'd just keep driving it. If you are worried about the unknown, go ahead and do the service now. i think i spent about $400 for the parts (belts, pump, tensioner, etc.)
