New Cl-s purchase

1st post. Just purchased a 2001 cl-s with 66k one owner miles and have a few questions. I need new tires and need to know if there are any other sizes other than the stock 215 50 17 which I can use, otherwise Im leaning heavily on these http://www.yokohamatire.com/tires/detail/avid_ascend for $130 each out the door. They only have a limited # of reviews but should improve gas mileage and these are a 65k mile v rated tire.

Check engine light was on and code p0740 torque converter clutch solinoid curcuit open.

SRS light on. Could the airbag sensors be bad?

Previous owner claims the transmission was replaced under recall even though he never had any issues with it. Warrantied till 100k miles. Car was built in 08/00.

Otherwise everything seems to be in order, it was garage kept, no dings paint 9.5 interior 9.0 no curb rash on the wheels etc. Drove it 100 miles to get it home yesterday with no other problems. Thanks!

Welcome.

If you haven't yet, please read through the helpful FAQ. Should answer most questions.
https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-cl-2001-2003-50/%2A%2A%2A-official-2nd-gen-cl-information-thread-%2A%2A%2A-480087/
Tires are covered in the wheels & tires section. You can fit 235-45-17's no problem & the speedo will even read correctly.
The SRS light is also covered in the thread stickied in this section
The Check engine light could be a few things.
87 gas all the time is bad. It requires premium because of the high compression ratio of the engine. The cars computer will detune the car to work with 87, but it's strongly recommended to only use it in emergencies.
The car is old too. It's due for the 105K mile service which is basically a timeing belt & spark plugs. Not cheap either. Roughly $700 or so.

Also need to replace a motor mount. Is there one of the 3 that usually goes out first?

you can try 215 55 17 - cheaper but -these are not low profile tires - falken brand probably the cheapest to get

SRS lights can be caused by faulty sensors or most likely you just need to reset . Try this one first -

about that p0740 - thats the code i had before on my 02" CL-s and after 3K miles -it took a crap on me -
BUT -could it be as simple as replacing the TCC solenoid and/or third clutch pressure switch. Its DIY kind of job nothing really techinical about it -

Good luck

The 235s are a little more than 3/4 of an inch wider. I wont buy a cheap falken again. Yokohama makes the avid ascend in both of these sizes.

0.5% is actually very small and the closest you'll get in 17s to the stock size.

$23 each more here for the 235s $130 vs $153. Might consider get getting the stock size and going full synthetic on a diy tranny fluid and oil change. They claim you get 2-4 better mpg with these tires.

Try Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires. I have great success with these tires.

DO NOT FLUSH THE TRANSMISSION! Acura/Honda says don't do it. To change the most fluid out at once would be to do 3 ATF changes at 3 quarts per change (known as the 3x3 method). This will change out the fluid and won't stir up the clutch pack material that will clog passages. Members that have gotten flushes have had transmission failures soon afterwards.

I personally stick with OEM Honda/Acura ATF. The new DW-1 formulation is now synthetic. Other members use mostly either Redline or Amsoil with success too.

I will do the 3x3 method diy. Tranny shop wanted $60-$70 for labor to flush it out. He told me to get 9 quarts. So maybe after further review, I will listen. It seems like a bs/unconventional way to do it, but it is what it is.

Some engines call for semi synthetic oil, can I eventually, by the 3rd wean, go to full syn? Or are these trannys that sensitive that I should not go to syn?

I went with michelin primacy mxv4 at $18.50 more per tire than the $130 yokohama avid ascend shipped after $70 giftcard and $5 off per tire. They will try to get you to bite on the road hazard for buy 3 get 1 free.

You have to call discount tire direct and talk to a sales rep.

Engines or transmissions? No need to wean to synthetic on either one. Just dump it in.

Good call on the Michelins. My friend (Sodaluvr) got a set for his boss and he really liked them, said they gripped well and told me to get a set too lol

Went ahead and ordered all 3 motor mounts, 2 oil filters, a cabin and engine air filter from Delray Acura. Between this and the tire purchase its about $950. The timing kit and water pump will be done in a few months.

I probably would have went aftermarket on the filters. Did you look into ordering from Curry Acura? Free fedex shipping from them.

Try this place: http://www.partsgeek.com/

This is where I usually get my maintenance parts. They even have emissions parts for my Pathfinder.

Im glad these tires work for you, but I will never buy directional tires again, if I can avoid it, as in this case.

Of course pretty much everybody put studded snow tires on the rears back in my day growing up. We did have some snow days back in the 60s and 70s. Blizzards. Nothing like the lake effect snow thru Meadville.

Got the new tires put on yesterday and they are very smooth. Changed oil and tranny fluid , set the car back down on the ground, and the front struts collapsed!

Took it to my buddys shop for the motor mounts and he installed new kyb for carqust made in japan $130 for labor. The struts were $111 each. 1 tranny mount was bad so it was another $21 for that. $150 for all the mounts labor. I hope I am done for a while.
