Does the 2001 cl-s have less transmission problems by the 2002 tl-s?

depends if you want a coupe or sedan.

If you chose a TL or 01/02 CL, then get one that still has the tranny warranty still in effect.
If you want a CL without the tranny problems, get the CL-S 6speed.

not too sure. check KBB and such. Also run a car check on it.
Drive the car and make sure the tranny shifts smoothly, ask for documentation of tranny replacement. And only buy it if he did the 105k service (plugs, timing belt, fluids, etc) because that sesrvice alone will save you nearly 1k.
