another solution for my auto CL guys

When I put the two trannys side by side and started swapping things over, it was really obvious what parts needed changed over. All the parts on the top of my Ody tranny that got swapped over were obvious. My tranny had a loop of hose leading up the front of the tranny, so it was obvious where the cooler went. Swapping the parts between the two trannys was actually pretty easy. I just looked in detail at both, marked with masking tape what tranny each part was on, and then started swapping. I also took masking tape and marked all the plugs with matching numbers between plug and receptacle, so there was no confusion. It just took time because as I took the top all apart, I checked all the crush washers, o-rings, gaskets, filter, filter spring, and all the other little parts that I could as I took the stuff apart on top. Just take some good pictures before you take things apart, and take your time, it's not that hard.

These newer transmissions do not have problems like the old ones do, that's why we are doing this swap. Heat was not a big issue in the TL/CL trans but more of the design. Of course heat doesn't help.
One area of question is do we need to swap the oil jet kit over? It was installed to help add additional fluid to the 2nd gear so it doesn't overheat and shatter. This is not a problem on the oddy trans so that's why there was never a recall to add the jet kit to that transmission. So do we really need to swap it?

You could buy the piece that goes there for an external cooler. See the photo of my '06 trans I swapped into my CL that already has this on the other thread "Details on tranny swaps" (I tried putting the link here). Go to a parts schematic online to see and get part.
https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-cl-problems-fixes-70/deatails-tranny-swaps-851461/
After reading this whole thread i got enough info to try this swap even though i wasnt 100% sure of everything due to scattered information. I posted the below on my thread, hope it helps.
I am the middle of the swap right now -
Got '06 Odyssey tranny with 44k miles for $600 - will be great replacement for that crappy '02 CL type S tranny I have . I have a question - I actually thinking about installing an external transmission cooler - and wondering how am I going to tap that connection to the tranny since that ATF cooler/warmer is getting in the way.

Swap it. Youll end up rebuilding the other one in the future.

Can i ask you why? from what im reading its a good replacment, but the rebuilt one is only $1300 with zero miles, also is upgraded due to the issues the old one had , plus a heavy duty torq conv with it, and a bigger cooler , it kinda sounded nice and these guys new what they are doing at the tranny shop. i wanted to go with it but now im stuck in between i cant make up my mind

torque converter and heat were not the issues with the transmission so you can toss those out the window. What else was upgraded? If nothing then your basically getting a rebuilt unit back. Glad to hear your original made it that far, many of use would be happy if we got the same miles you did out of our transmissions.
""" Includes a NEW HEAVY DUTY TORQUE CONVERTER!
What makes our transmission better than all the rest?
The transmissions have been overhauled with:
· New steel and friction clutches
· All new o-rings and seals
· A new internal filter
· New torque converter
· New differential bearings
· New gear bearings
· An add-on external filter with magnet to catch debris from old transmission.
· All are updated, and come with A WRITTEN 24 MONTH WARRANTY
Updates Include:
· Increasing the pressure in the valve body to the torque converter so it lasts longer
· A new HEAVY DUTY torque converter
· An external filter
Since 1998 Honda and Acura torque converters have been failing product wide. The torque converters are weak and are coming apart, clogging the internal filter and in turn, allowing the transmission to slip from lack of pressure. To make matters worse, the factory cooler for the transmisson is just too small, and not transfering enough heat as it should. These transmissions have been upgraded to allow installation of an aftermarket cooler. The bigger the better. We sell them here, ask our sales staff for one, they are $60.

Mine 134K - I replaced the tranny with 06' Odyssey tranny - Works great > I added external Cooler and the magnefine filter as well. The only issue I have is the VSA and ! light on my dashboard .

If you're getting the car back on the road to sell, then go with the cheapest option. But if you plan to continue driving, the rebuilt tranny will fail again setting you back another $1-2k. The Odyssey tranny seems to be a much better, albeit more expensive at first, option.

Does anyone know if the '04-'06 Odyssey tranny will work with a 1st Gen CL (3.0)? Mine is starting to go, and am debating what to swap into it since I need the car to last about 5 more years (mine is a '99 w/ 95k miles).

06TL trans should work as well as my service manager swapped one into is cl-s
No it won't mate
No it wont work with that ecm or harness.
Yes it will physically fit in the car with some modifications.
Buy a reman 4at from honda or use a shop that knows how to build them using honda's latest recommendations. The latest version should last a very long time. as they corrected the bearing issue and removed the internal filter along with beefing up the oil supplied to the cluch pack. IF you buy used make SURE it has the external filter and blue painted nuts on it.
actually heat was the issue but not due to insufficient cooling per sae, the oil delivered to the 3rd gear clutch pack was insufficient to do the job resulting oil temps spiking >315F = cooked oil and toasted cluctch pack. The issue was never really fixed and the trans was ultimately redesigned. This is also why you gotta change oil every 15K or so...

I'd say that they feel the same. The only thing I've noticed is that the RPM is slightly higher at 70mph. Only higher by a few hundred RPM. I seem to remember being at 2000 to 2200, now it's at 2500-2700. Small price to pay for a better tranny. I changed my 01' CL with an 05' Odyssey. Next oil change I'm going to change the fluid and the filter again.

Thanks, i dont know whether my tranny is going or not, but about 2 wks ago it started acting weird, jerky in the begining, but its normal now, it use to shift at about 2500 rpm from 2nd to 3rd, now it the rpm goes higher before shifting, it shifts like before nothing unusual no jerkiness not CEL no flashing D, the car actually feels better and more lighter than before.
And no it doesn't just rev and not take off. I've had this car 2 yrs the first owner had it checked and serviced from dealer the first 100k and had an Acura pre sale inspection done before the sale, he told me it was original tranny and now it has 270km on it. In the last 2 yrs i've had 3 tranny oil changes done on the car, just to be safe i think i'm gonna do it every 15-18k rather than at 30 or 40k. all original i no only thing i've done to the car is a bigger pipe from cat to the exhaustincluding the Y and intake resonator removed.

Hi Everyone,
I am new to this forum & am located in the SF Bay Area. I have a 2001 Acura CLS with a transmission that just blew out on me! I called some shops, but they all say that the 2006 Oddy transmission is not compatible & won't do it. I was wondering if there was anyone local to the bay that might be interested in performing the 2006 Oddy swap on my car. Please PM me if interested.
Also, although the motor sounds and runs great, it has about 200k miles on it. I was wondering if I should be aware of any options or considerations while I am at it. Thanks in advance!

I have not yet received a reply for anyone who might be interested in doing my 2001 Acura CLS to Oddy transmission swap in the Bay Area. Would anyone know anyone or a shop in the San Francisco Bay Area (or surrounding area) that might do it?

I apologize if this is a repeat question, but is the bolt pattern identical between these two sets? Does any of need to be drilled and tapped?
They are listed separate in terms of compatibility. I read earlier in this thread that the touring has IMRC but that this is related to the intake not tranny. So what are they not listed as compatible?

Mine uses the '06 EX - Transmission is identical to the Acural CL -Therefore its a direct bolt on - you dont have to drill - The only difference:
1. CL uses a hockey puck style cooler/warmer - While Odyssey uses tranny radiator cooler - therefore you need an after market transmission cooler (like B&M transmission cooler) - You need 3/8 transmission line hoses as well.
Note - you need hose fittings to convert the hose from 1/2 to 5/16 (cooling lines from the engine to the throttle body. - you can get that in pep boys .
2. Make sure the shifter cable cover of the Odyssey is still there - because the CL shifter cable cover will hold the cable tight. -
3. I used the shifter switch -from odyssey - there's another cable connected to it and the plugs and pins will not able to connect to the car -- so use the one in CL.
Forgive me if I cant remember the actual part names -
These are the only changes I made to make that 06 tranny to work.
Since your located here in the Bay Area Cali - my recommendation is craigslist - Theres a lot honda experienced tech that will help you do the swap right in your own home -cheaper too = BTW - theres like photos in this thread that will help you understand what needs to be done.
Good luck - hope it helps.
Mine works fine - I already put 6K miles - so far so good .

Ok guys......
Preffered would be a 04-06 oddy trans, since it is a mom mobile there is much less chance it has been beaten on and they are plentiful in the yards.
It is not completely a direct drop in there are some parts (trans range switch, trans filter housing) that need to be transferred and a couple holes that are cast into the housing need to be tapped, the bosses are there they just need to be drilled and tapped.
Triptronic is all a matter of ECU, the physical trans has nothing to do with it.

OK tragedy has struck. The tranny has been fine for quite a while. Last week the wife drove it to Wally World and when she came out and started the car, the D5 light was flashing, the Exclamation Point was flashing, and the Check Engine was on. (Actually the Check Engine light has been on for a while, I had the code read, and they said it was the gas cap.) Anyway the car would not move in D5. She shut it off for 10 minutes and the next time she started it everything was normal. She brought it home and told me about it. Sure enough, I went to start the car and it was doing it again. I decided to do my fluid and filter change as I had planned to do anyway and then take it and get the codes read. While I was changing the fluid and filter (the fluid actually looked pretty good, nice and pink), I noticed that the ground cable under the battery from the chassis to the tranny was completely broken. So I replaced it. I took the battery out to do that. I took it for a drive, varied conditions city, highway, and it looked OK. She drove it to work on Monday and everything was fine. Tuesday she stopped to get gas at the corner before going to a meeting, and after getting gas the D5 light was flashing and the Exclamation Point was on again. So she drove it home, about 300 Yards at the slow speed that it would go. So now I'm a little stuck. I don't really want to drive it across town at 2mph to get the code read. My brother has a code reader, I'll have to borrow it.
Anybody else got any ideas?

OK, Borrowed, the code reader and read code P1768. I've been Googling, but have not found anything definitive. Looks like it could be a number of things. Seeing as the fluid was clear and pink and the filter looked good, at this point, I'm leaning towards an electrical problem. Anybody have any first hand experience with P1768?

Not always the case. I think I have a new lead. I stopped at my local Honda Dealership, and the nice gal in the service bay did some looking for me and printed out a TSB on the 01-03 Accords and Oddy's. Seems that there have been instances where the Master Relay has stuck closed. That keeps the ECM live and since the rest of the car is off, the measured and calculated currents for the Shift solenoid A don't match. That will cause the P1768. To further support that theory, the car sat for a week because I was too busy to look at it and now the battery is dead, and no, nothing else was left on. I'm charging the battery now and will check the master relay next.
