deatails on tranny swaps?

I'm completely new to these 2nd gen CL/TL...recently check engine P0740 and drove the car for two days before tranny died. After few days of searching the web and this forum ive gathered that we can use different model tranny. Im thinking of using the 04-06 odyssey tranny but ive yet to see what modifications need to be done...im tight on cash and cant afford to just buy a tranny and experiment. Please if anyone has the details or can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Go through this entire thread. It should answer any questions you could come up with.

Just read the posts by NVA-AV6.

did you have any drivers side axle issues, or shift cable cover issues? I notice the drivers side diff housing comes out about a half inch further the stock trans. Also notice shift cable cover area seems a touch different. I got a 01 CLS as well, got the range switch and filter assy stuff done, and just wonderin about those other issues before tearin into this swap, this 06 oddy trans is a EX with 45k and cant wait to have 3rd gear again!! thanks!

Anyway you can post a pic of the range switch and filter assy? Tried locating on the parts site but didn't see it. Also I got a hell of a deal on a tranny with low miles, one of my friends brother got an 03 tranny he got for his 01 oddy that didn't fit few months back and its been sitting. Anyone know if they work the same as the 04-06? He's my boy said he can prob get it for me for like $150. Thanks

sorry I'm such a noob but I mainly dealt with 90-97 accords and z32

Mine was from an '06 oddy EX too (51K miles).
No axle issues. The shift cable cover is slightly different. It's mentioned in other threads to get the cover with the replacement trans...I didn't and just bought a new one from Honda dealer (about $30). I made my CL one work for a couple days but, it really doesn't fit right. After installing new cover, I adjusted my cable slightly. You remove the panel on the passenger side along the shifter inside car. There is a nut you'll see holding the cable. The end of the cable has a slotted fitting. Loosen the nut and make any adjustment necessary. I don't think I swapped the range switch, just one connector with wires attached that was different (and cooler/filter assembly). Be sure and read some posts in the mentioned thread. I know it's long and there is lots of posts that are off topic but, there is good info there.
BTW, car shifts great and everything works.

Thanks for the info did

dy. I'm going to buy my tranny today 05 oddy with 77k for $1,000....

Just want to confirm.

Swap filter assemby (using CL) and new filter.
Range switch wire/plug? Seems few people used odyssey range switch.

Either way ill take pics of the parts I swap over because seems like everyone who said they were never did.

If you do, big thanks to you. There's been all words and no pics in the tranny swap thread. I plan to take pics when my time comes too.

I know, only thing I'm little nervous with is swapping the parts but I've done multiple tranny and engine swaps, mainly on older Honda and ACURA but its all the same process just some have more pieces than others. I will definitely take pics of the stuff I swap fron one tranny to the other and post em here and on the tranny swap thread for anyone else.

I've been busy but, will get some pics up in the next week (for what they are worth). When you get the old trans out, put it along side the replacement. It will be obvious what you need to swap over. From there, it's just nuts & bolts. Do one thing at a time. Someone recommended swapping over the speed sensors so, I did. They do look a little different when removed but, not sure if the connector is different. I had to switch the pipe over for the filter too since the filter set up is different. My old pipe had a "T" for the oiljet thingy. I cut the hose off short at the "T" and put a bolt in the hose with a clamp to seal it off. If you've done other mechanical work, don't be nervous on the part for swapping parts over as it's fairly easy when you have the two transmissions next to each other.

If you can do a complete tranny replacement, swapping the different items between the two trannys should be cake.

Im sure it will, I almost got the tranny out, just need to drop the crossmember and unbolt it from the mounts (trying to keep motor in to avoid more work) Im only little nervous because im still not 100% sure on what is to be swapped. i already got the filter stuff out. i think the range switch is along low side of tranny so i guess thats it.

Got my swap done. 06 Oddy Trans in my 01 CL-s. Everything went great. I'm prolly gonna get the oe shift cable cover for the oddy trans. Shift selector is just a touch off. I also swapped the dipstick and jet kit over along with range switch, filter, and heat exchanger assy. Used trans is quiet and works great. Hopin for alot over trouble free life left.

OK guys so i finish the swap and thank god everything went well. As eric5582 mentioned I also swapped the dipstick and jet kit over along with range switch, filter, and heat exchanger assembly. Here are a few pics i took and outlined for the guys like me who don't know much about these newer cars.

The GREEN outline point to the range switch, after removing i noticed the wires were same colors and plug same design. however the parts outline in RED definitely needs swapping, that harness uses about 3 plugs vs the CLS 1 giant plug.

Photo above shows the oil jet assembly and the fill plug.

When swapping the filter assembly you also need this line along with the fill plug.

Once you remove the top part of the oil jet kit, remove the filter assembly in photo above.

This is the Odyssey tranny with oil jet kit, filter assembly, range switch all swapped over.

Also make sure you get the cover for the shift linkage from your oddy trans because the CL/TL will not fit properly and will cause your shifter to be off. If your like me and did not get the cover with your tranny try calling them and ask if you can get one or buy one from honda at $30 (part # 24901-RGL-000)

Hope this helps anyone who is thinking of taking on this job.

My Oddy trans (2006) was a little different due to the external type cooler set up. Here are some photos with notations. Someone mentioned the speed sensors were different so, I changed mine over and pointed them out in a pic. The speed sensors look a little different when removed but, I did not check to see if the connector part is different. Jaber18 did not mention these so maybe they don't need to be swapped. Hope this helps someone. Sorry it's late for you Jaber18. If someone has questions, it's probably best to send me a private message so I get notified.

"As eric5582 mentioned I also swapped the dipstick"

I don't want any credit but, I mentioned this too. NOTE: As I also mentioned, the fill marks are a little off when putting the two dipsticks side by side (at least on my swap). If I was to go off the CL dipstick marks, the fluid level would be a little low. I made marks on my dipstick based off the Oddy dipstick along side.
Put mouse cursor over image to enlarge. I do not know how to insert the larger images.

Peace.

Well done.

Those transmissions look like they weigh a ton.

drn33 I did not need to swap the speed sensors, my plugs were the same. the small harness next to the range switch did need to be swapped in my tranny because the Ody used 3 plugs vs cl 1 plug

Thanks for clearing that up drn33....better late than never.

Thanks so much for the pics, this will make thing easier for future members doing the swap like myself. Keep the pics and DIYs coming guys!

It looks like the holes on the dipsticks are nearly identical except maybe the CL's holes are moved a little higher? If that's the case, it don't look like it is a big deal as long as you keep the fluid level above the last hole on the CL's stick for the oddy trans right?

I think they weigh close to 300 pounds. Definitely need a couple of strong guys to lift this sucker. I've never lifted anything this heavy before in my life lol I got mine sitting on a furniture mover with a 1k pound capacity

NOTE: The CL holes are slightly lower. You are correct, keep the level above the lower hole and you'd be ok. I am picky, that's why I scribed the marks to line up with the Oddy holes.

Much Thanks!!!

Id just like to thank everyone for their input to this thread! I've been reading this forum since I bought my CL-S three and a half years ago but just recently registered due to my tranny problems. I just completed the Oddy swap(with your guys help) and only ended up spending $1250 with labor!!!!! Never would have happened without this GREAT resource. So much thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge of this beautiful car.

You can follow the same steps for your CL-P. The transmissions were the same.
