Wrapping flex pipe on xs headers tonight. Do I need that silicone coating spray?

I am wrapping the flex pipe on my xs power headers to try and eliminate some of the resonance coming directly from the flex pipe. Can I just wrap the flex pipe or do I have to wrap the flex pipe and spray it with the high temp silicone coating?

I don' t know about spray I didn't use any. But my header wrap just fell off last week after about 3 months or so. I know the problem was that I only clamped one end. The flex pipe was all that I wrapped and almost all the noise was gone btw. You'll be happy when your done. Remember to clamp it down on both ends of the flex pipe with some hose clamps. Also remember to wet the wrap first to make it easier to stretch. Oh and it will smell weird for about a week.

alright. I was planning on trying to just do it without wetting the wrap, but I will if I have too. I already bought two hose clamps and will do it right...I don't want to have to do the same work over even though it only takes 5min. to jack up the car.

I actually switched the schedule till tomorrow afternoon. I'm going to do this and install my cold air intake at the same time

It was sort of a buzzing sound. The flex pipe wasn't the same quality as the oem flex pipe...there was very small gaps.

The best way to figure out where it is coming from is to seafoam your car and see if your exhaust is leaking anywhere.

Another way(which I did) was to put the parking brake on, jack the car up on jack stands, and get underneath. Have someone else start the car and listen for the noise to find the problem.

I had two problems. One was my flex pipe, which I wrapped. That elimated almost all of the noise. The other problem I had was the heat shield around the cat converter had a screw that rusted so bad that it didn't hold the heatshield tight on both sides. This produced an anyone raddle noise. I fixed this by putting two large steel hoseclamps on really tight.

BTW, don't wrap your headers. Only wrap your flex pipe if your having resonance. Comptechs probly won't need to be wrapped b/c they are high quality

ok yea im getting a buzzing/rattling sound wen i start the car and sumtimes when I hit the gas slightly. I got under the car because i thought it could be the heat shield but the heat shield was on there pretty tight. Im going to wrap the flex pipe and see if that helps. Thanks

try removing your cat shield, that was my source of resonance and i think it may be all of our issues. it sounded like angry bees in a soda can

This is old skool hot rod technology.

You wrap it with "exhaust wrap" or "header wrap". It's a thermo wrap that helps hold the heat in the pipes. This has 2 benefits, a lower engine bay temperature as well as expediting the flow of exhaust out of the pipe.

When the hot gas hits a colder pipe, it slows the flow of exhaust and robs power. If you keep the pipes hot, the gas can evacuate more quickly and effeciently.

On the XSheaders most people are just wrapping the flex pipe which has become a known cause of excess noise. I wrapped mine from the engine right down to the cat. I didn't use the silicon spray and it has help up rather well for over a year.

This is bad advice for some one who wants to get the most HP gains from the mod.

High quality Comptechs will benefit from a full header wrap as well.

Header wrap wasn't designed as a luxury sound proofing mod, it's done to make more power and make your engine run more effeciently. Not my it's just the facts.

It's not really a mod. This has mostly only been used as a help for resonance.

The reason why I say to not wrap the headers is b/c it keeps way more heat inside the headers. This can lead to leaky welds.

You are going two need to people to wrap your flex pipe so that the wrap is really tight. You will also need two medium size steel hose clamps to hold the wrap on for good.

I've had mine wrapped top to bottom with no issues, no leaks or resonance. The point is to actually keep that heat in the header so the exhaust flows out faster.

If my headers do eventally leak, they're $100 shipped, I'll replace them.

Do a google search on "exhaust wrap" and you won't find any one touting noise reduction as a benefit.

^^^noise reduction is a benefit for people with xs headers because the flex pipe leaks.

I understand that it can help if you wrap the headers top to bottom, but I won't take the risk of damaging the headers in the long run

One of the issues I have heard of wrapping your headers is that if any moisture gets underneath it, it will stay in there and corrode your headers. I understand thermo-wrapping your flexpipe. But if you're looking for something to help out with heat, check out Jet Hot coating. I'm going to get it on my headers. My brother got it on his motorcycle and it works wonders. Lowers temps by alot.

Do you think they did the extensive wrap job to this car to make it quiet?

Like I said, this is old skool hot rod technology.
