In this thread the idea of getting custom made cams for the J32 and J30 engine has been brought up. So thought I'd put this in both CL forums to see what the response is and if there's enough interest we could start a group buy. I along with I'm sure everyone else is mainly interested in the cost which I don't know at this time but I'm sure the more people we have the cheaper the price. here are two companies that make custom cams

If anyone knows of any others please post their site hear. Now I would like to contact these companies and try to get as much info from them as possible including a quote but I don't feel that I'm the right person for this since I don't know enough about engines to carry on much of an intelligent conversation with these people. So if someone would like to step up and get some info for all of us that would be much appreciated.

do the 6th gen Accord heads accept the same size cams as ours? I can post up a thread in the forums over there and get them into it too.

we will probably need a minimum of 20 people who are serious, so that means we will need 40-50 who are curious.

i could think of a few others better suited, but i could try something. i'd like to wait another week or so of bumping these threads bc some people are probably out of town for the holiday and i'd like to present something like "we have 50 people showing interest, so even if HALF actually go through thats 25 orders". not to mention i just posted in the TL and in an Accord forum so those guys will probably jump in on this too.

 

OOoo you're right I didn't even think of the accords, good thinkin. So that's the Cl 1st and 2nd gen, the TL 2nd gen and the accords 6th gen. I'd be in, but I just put CLS cams in my first gen, so I don't feel like spending more money on cams.

just for reference though, the J32 cams fit the J30 engines perfectly, howere for the J30 engines with a distributor systen you have to have notces in the rear cam for the distributor for ignition timing.

I can see the cams doing real good for the SC'ed people, but not more than 10 whp/tq for the NA people.

what about increasing the exhaust lobes, as it seems that those have gone nearly unchanged since the J30. For all we know the only reason they have kept them the same size is for noise.

Or maybe any bigger and they'll hit the pistons? probably not.

 

i'm sure a slight increase across ALL lobes would be ideal. ;]

ghost_master - so, if we get them to CL-S length/size, but increase lift across all intakes/exhaust, what needs to be done to get them to bolt-in to a j30?

 

the J30 and J32 cams are the same (excluding lobe sizes). the only possible difference would be for the J30's with distributors. 00-02 accord V6's can have the CLS cams bolted right in because they have direct ignition like the J32.

The only J30's with distributors are on the 98-99 accord V6 and all first gen V6 CL's 97-99.

I don't know if there are any differences between the J30 and J32 valvetrain though. I think the actual valves ports are larger on the J32 heads than the J30 ones, but I have no idea about any differences with the valves/springs/retainers.

 

ghost - i guess what i'm asking, did you need to have a machine shop notch the CL-S cams? if so, when/if we set up w/ the vendor, i will find out if the notches can be adapted to a single set, so ALL can buy in without worrying.

 

yeh, I had a shop notch the cams, but since the direct ignition setups just have that end of the cam spinning freely, I can't see any problem with putting notched cams in the head of a car without a distributor.

 

i'm not giving up on this.

-theres a bunch that will get down on this pending it works with the distributor system and proves gains.

i think we have a good amount. it's time to talk to find a vendor.
