When do you replace your battery?

I currently have my car in for inspection/emissions, and oil change. The car has 43K miles, and is almost 5 years old. Got a call that it passed the tests and all is good. Well except they recommend the replacement of the battery. They say it failed their load test. Well they want $150 for the new battery, so I of course said no thank you.

Yes the battery is almost 5 years old but the car still starts just fine. I won't be driving the car very much until spring so in the spring would you replace the battery, or wait till it dies? If I do get a new battery it will come from walmart cause that where I buy all my battery's.

So I can replace it in the spring and have peace of mind, or wait till it does and call Acura road side assistance

3-5 years is normal range.

Get an Optima & it will last a bit longer.

Thanks for the suggestion but I can't see paying for an Optima battery. The ones from walmart come with a 3 year replacement warrenty. So the battery can be replaced at any walmart nationwide 24/7. The one on my explorer went out after 3 year but not due to the battery. The alternator went out and killed the battery. They gave me cash for it no questions asked, the new one I bought has me covered for three more years

I voted 'wait till it dies', only because thats the only time I've had to replace the battery. Parents bought a new battery from Acura per their recommendation, then three months later it died. Was replaced by Acura for 'free' of course. Now, this battery's been running for a little over a year now w/o any problems, but I won't be purchasing any more Acura batteries. I would consider getting an Optima battery, but I've heard so many stories about them dieing just like any other battery out there, so I wouldn't consider them worth the money. I'd agree with the OP, Walmart has a pretty good deal.

Paying for an optima?

$140 for a redtop. 5 year warranty.

A die hard will run you $85. It's not that much more money.

And where do you hear these stories of Optima's dieing? Not on this forum?

Mine lasted 5 3/4 years and 43,000 miles. I bought a replacement at Advance Auto for $50.00. It worked great for a 1 1/2 years until I traded my CL-S. Seemed to have a bit more punch than the OEm since the lights did not dim at start up which the OEM did from day one.

50 for a walmart. 3 year warrenty. I can get almost 3 walmart battery's for the price of the optima, which equals almost 9 years warrenty. Plus since they dont' check you battery when you "claim" its bad you could theorticly take it in for a replacement every three years and always have a new battery for the price of only one. I don't do this but someone could...

Anyway this isn't a thread about which battery to buy, but when to replace... So peeps to to not hijack my thread

I was also advised by the Acura dealer to replace the battery for $150. I declined and will be buying a battery from Auto Zone. The walmart deal sounds pretty good, I'll have to check it out.

FYI: I have about 100k on my car and it still starts up and runs fine.

And I've read several other threads like it on car audio forums. It just seems like their quality control isn't really up to par.

I am still on my original battery. Bought my '03 TL-S in April of '02 and 96,000 later, still on the same battery. By the way my battery failed Acura's load test three years running

Speaking of batteries, what kind does our remote FOB take? Do I have to switch it within 60 seconds or something to avoid deprogramming?

I don't consider 51R batteries to be in the same class. These are only for supercharged CL's & are rare & not even meant for a car like the CL.
I can understand those dieing.

i would say replace the battery when it fails.

if it didn't pass the load test. your battery is FAILING. you should replace it b4 it gets worse, as it will.

oh and stop being a fucking cheap bitch and don't buy a SHITTY over priced walmart battery.

Wait 'til it dies. It's still has life, let it live.

I'd say stay away from optima's even though my yellowtop in my other car is still running strong after 4 years. Many of my friends who have bought optima's recently are having problems with them.

The battery I recommend for people running audio systems is the Orbital dry cell. Many car audio enthusiast are choosing them over optima's.

But in your case, just buy whatever from walmart. It's all about customer service and product warranty these days imo.

don't worry, i'm not singling you out. i'll say that EXACT statement to anyone looking to buy a cheap crappy battery. Sorry it is sounded a little too rude, which going back and rereading it may have.

take out the "fucking" from my statement if you think its too harsh.

First your "opinion" doesn't mean a damn to me, and as stated before this is not a thread to discuss battery brands

Second where are your facts to backup that walmart batterys are cheap crap? I have been using them for the last 10 years in my vehicles and some have been used in some harsh conditions and never once has one given me trouble. The only one that has ever failed, had problems because of the alternator.

Actually now I think about you sound like a typical badge whore

badge whore? w/e.

my "advice" was just that. advice. I'll ALWAYS recommend quality parts over not quality parts.

if you've had good luck with shitty parts. okay. use em. I was just giving my advice. i guess a little too harshly for you. oh well.

anyways, i'm not gonna sit here and argue or anything, i've already stated my "opinions" and given my "advice".

good day.

Batteries tend to last longer in the north with the cooler temperatures from my experiences. I have a 01 CL & just got a new battery from AutoZone. You only need a new battery when the 1 you're using dies. It does give you some warning signal though. 1st signs of trouble are...power steering starts to sound whinny & of course your car your car not starting on the 1st pop. Take it to AutoZone and have them do a load test on it, they'll tell if its "good or bad". I picked 1 up from them for $85 with a 3yrs free replacement if if fails & a 5yr additional pro-rated after the 1st 3 yrs (total 8yrs). Best of luck.

Same 2025 used in many watches and most other remotes. Just need one. Doesn't matter how long you take to replace it.
