whatsup with purple tints?

Im about to purchase an 03 cls 6 speed (only 13K!)...
anyway, I noticed the car had been tinted all around - and the windows have a purple hue to them. It looks terible considering the car is black.

what causes this?....sun?/ smoke? or is it just cheap tint?

discoloration from the sun on cheap film.

you should get the films off and have them redone if you really need tints (take aluminized film (i think they're called) this time, they almost do not discolor with time (they last much much longer) and the same % will block more sun, or need lighter % to block the same amount of sun compared with cheap black-getting-purple-with-time film)

how do you scrape it off the rear window without damaging the antenna and defroster?

A good tint shop can do it. You should NOT try it yourself. There's no scraping involved.
Basically heat up the rear window & peel it away. Different shops have different ways. Heat gun, hair drier, black garbage bag in the sun for 4+ hours(I heard this works best)

The reason why the tint looks purple is because the previous owner used chemical's to clean the windows. Windex as ammonia which makes the tint fade. I was really consired when my window were tinted. The shop advise me just to clean the window with soap and water. When i take my car to the wash I don't let clean the windows at all. Windex now makes it safe for tint. Just check the label.

Since its only an 03 the sun wouldnt have done that much damage already. Its because of cleaners with ammonia like already mentioned. car stores sell window cleaner safe for tints.

Not always true. The cheaper TINT tends to discolor very easily. And it's amazing how some people will buy a $30K car and try to get a cheap ass TINT job done on their car.
