chevron or any high quality conventional dino oil is just as good as synthetic if you change your oil every 4-5k or under.

so chevron dino 10-30 every 5k.

It probably has to do with CAFE standards that Honda & Ford are following. I say probably because I've never seen any proof of this, although the argument is compelling. Some folks that are in the oil sales business state this as a fact, but I've yet to see their proof.

Basically, CAFE is a policy that the auto makers are trying to follow. It describes environmental concerns that the manufacturers should have. The long and short of it is that putting a thinner oil in the car probably increases the entire fleets MPG by 1 or 2, and this makes the manufacturer look more environmental. For Ford, this is a real issue, as they manufacture a lot of gas guzzling trucks. For Honda, I'd guess it's more about an environmental-conscious image as they have very few guzzlers (if any) in their fleet. Do a google search on CAFE if you want to know more.

My 2003 Acura CL-S also has the 5W-20 requirement, as does the 2002 model year.

You'll probably be fine with both 5W-20 or 5W-30. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Still figuring out which way to go, but synthetic is likely to get the nod - too many plusses with lubricity and high temp stability and much lower carbon formation, and no significant monetary reason not to use synthetics with their extended change intervals.

5W is great for easy winter starting and getting things oiled up quickly. I believe I will be using 5W-30 due to summer temps in the desert....

Am trying to figure out which brand of synthetic to use .

bringing an old thread back. ive been using pennzoil platinum full synthetic 5w30 oil now in my cls motor for the past 15K miles since my swap. ive noticed that on my first oil change about 5K i drained it into a large oil bucket and didnt pay attention to how much oil drained out. on the second oil change i drained it into a pan and noticed i drained only 1.25 Qts out. i thought it was a mistake soo i rechecked several times and no more would drain out. now im like 3K after last oil change and the oil pressure light has been coming on during high rev acceleration or sharp cornering. checked oil level and was really low. added like 2 qts to get to normal level. i was told that i need to go to 5w20 semi synthetic oil. bc the full synthetic 5w30 is being broken down quicker. ive checked for oil leaks but the motor is spotless. prior to the swap all seals, gaskets, etc on the motor were replaced before installing to prevent any leaks in near future. im using a K&N high performance oil filter(the $12.00 filter). i could have the j30a1 dipstick and not the j32a2 dipstick bc they look the same but i think they are different lenghts. what motor oil is eveyone running in their cls????

Mobil 1, switch between 5w20 and 5w30. Depends on what's available in the 5 qt containers. No problems whatsoever with burning oil.

my car a 2002 CLS what acura puts in when they change it. I don't drive it hard and change the oil every 5 or 6K

my 2007 Yamaha Vino 125, Mobil 1 since:

1. high tolerance for heat as engine is air cooled
2. spends most of it's life near 9K

If your using that much oil you have serious problems. It shouldnt use that much oil period.

I run 5w20 full syn for 10 to 15k mile intervals

Sorry to correct you and go off topic, but the Civic was never available in with the K24. The Element motor is the same as the older Accords.

Back on topic, Mobil 1 synthetic, but this past change I wasn't able to get Mobil 1 (sold out, wtf?) so I used Castrol synthetic. I will go back to Mobil 1 though.
