What the hell broke back there?

I was making a right turn into a shoping center drivway way today when I heard and felt a pop from the right rear quarter. Since I'm a charter member of the scratched rim club, I stay far away from curbs so I know I didn't hit the curb. I parked the car and took a look under the car. I'm not a car expert, but nothing was dragging on the pavement and nothing looked obviously broken. I drove home very slowly with the windows down and thought I heard something creaking when I went around corners or up driveways. I took it to the nearest dealer, again driving slowing, but I didn't hear anything this time. The service advisor looked at it and took me for a ride on the back lot and neither of of heard or felt anything despite him doing some quick turns, hard braking, and hard acceleration. Since they didn't have any loaners and I need a car to make money, I left with my car. On the way home I was more aggressive and it felt fine. That is, until I turned down my street. As I drive though a dip at an angle, the car rocks to the right, then the left, before getting level. THUD! I took the turn several more times and got a THUD at the same point every time. It as the car rocks to the left during the turn. I took everything out of the trunk, including the spare tire and tools, and it still does it. I take this same turn several times a day and have never heard that sound before. Any ideas?

how many miles on the car? Could it be the suspension? Like a blown seal or something?

sounds like a blown shock. That would of been the initial poping....the oil bursting out of it. The creaking would be the shock going up and down in a oiless tube.

Sounds like a busted shock or shock mount, or maybe busted sway bar?

How would the car behave with a blown shock? I feels normal, even on the freeway. Maybe I just haven't driven it hard enough yet to feel the difference.

What kind of popping noise does it make? Noticeably loud?

The inital pop was one of those "what the fuck was that?" kind of noises. My first thought was that I cut the corner and hit the curb. But I've ruled that out since the right rear wheel (where the noise came from) is in perfect condition. Besides, I avoid curbs like the plague since I scratched on a few months ago.

The noise that I can produce on demand by going through the dip by my house is not as loud. I took a friend for a ride and she heard it too. Its like something is loose and the left to right rocking makes it shift. My previous car was a 3 door Integra. This same dip always made its rear hatch shift and creek. But the CL hasn't done it until today.

Maybe a stabilizer bar ... look for pieces around the area where you first heard the initial sound.

I would think with a blown shock you would notice a dip on that corner of the car. Is it possible that there is a spring retainer that has let loose?

I took the jack out for my test drives through the dip by my house and it still does it.

A blown shock sounds like a reasonable guess to me but in all honesty the car is under warranty take it in and let them look at it on a hoist.Unless you drove over something that caused the problem it should be a warrantable issue.Since the noise can be easily duplicated it should be a nobrainer for the service department to set things right.Jens

If it's a blow shock, then it would just be extra extra bouncy on that corner. If it's a broken spring/spring retainer, then you would see a dip. Probably a broken suspension component as suggested above, like a stabilizer or suspension link.

I tend to agree with this. A busted swaybar end could easily cause the noise you describe. Take a look at this .avi I took of my car, the sway bar end is shown in the last few seconds of the clip. I suspect this could be part of the problem. If not, a blown shock or loose coil spring would be my next guess.

Here's a snapshot of the swaybar end:

Put the car in park and get out. Go to each corner of the car and press down on the bumper. If it bounces in a particular corner then that is where the problem is.
