warranty extensions

Does anyone know, or have they extended their warranty for an extra few years? If so, can you do it at any time, and how much does it cost, and is it worth it? I like the fact that the dealer does a lot of work and replaces parts under warranty with no or little costs to me. I am not looking forward to paying full price for every little thing.

acura has a number of plans out there for 5years/100k miles or 7 years
some have a deductible and some don't
different dealers sell these plans at different prices so you can shop around
but there's a catch...
if you go to a dealer for a repair and you didn't buy the warranty from them lots of dealers like to scare customers away with "we have to check it out first to see if it's covered" diagnostic fees which they say they'll wave if it is covered. the logic is "i didn't get to rape you for the warranty policy so i'm not gonna fix your car" - (who...me...bitter?)

there are also aftermarket warranty companies from which you can purchase policies...
only bad part with these guys is that they're a pain to deal with from the dealers point of view....acura warranties are easier to bill so there's no waiting for approvals or payment or anything like that

Well, here is my 2 cents.....

The main reason for the extended warranty for me, was to cover the tranny problem. Well, the tranny is now covered to 100K.

You are going to have to pay at least $1,000 for the extended. Sit down and ponder what would go wrong that would cost you $1K after the warranty ends. Besides, if something does go wrong out of warranty, you have a $1K head start on fixing it...

Bottom line, I would say forgo the extended.

Ok thanks, I just have that feeling that as soon as its up, i am gonna get all those crazy charges for little things that they always do under warranty like smoothing the rotors and stuff like that. Plus i have had to have several small parts replaced, all free, but could see them charging a lot for that platic junk.

Warranty Extension

I bought the 100k extension but at this point do not have enough miles on my 01 CL to get to use it. I feel the same way about the plastics and junk, however, most of that stuff is not covered under the extended warranty anyway. Mostly just mechanical motor/tranny parts .

Oh well.. forgo it most stuff as I found is not really that expensive, most of the cost is labor at the dealer, so if you got some mechanical skillz .. screw the warranty..

From what I understand, if you want to "ditch" the warranty, you can settle for a refund, for a pro-rated amount.

How much did I pay? I got the 100k 7 year $0 deductible warranty included in my price quote, back in Septe. 2002, for my '03 CL-S 5, w/ Nav, 5a/t. I bought it all for $31,000, which came out to about $33,xxx including tax. I know how valuable these warranties can be, after having a Land Rover Discovery (with more tha $25,000 in repairs since new in 1995!!) Lots of the repairs were for stuff I could live with, but what was covered, like Dash replacement, complete sunroof replacement for newer, better designed ones that came out in 1997, etc...

I chose the $0, because if anything small goes, I want to just get it fixed-

I asked about getting my refund on the extended. I was offered $570 back when I paid $1K. At that price, I decided I may as well keep it. Felt screwed as I only had 40K on the clock. Was told the extended started on day 1. What a crock, since day 1 starts on you regular warranty.

Grey.. sorry but you can't compare a Land Rover to an Acura.

Only thing that I can think of that would cost bucks on ours cars is the tranny (which is covered) and the Nav. If the Nav heads South, most of us would most likely leave it....

Alternator is the only other thing that could go, but your $1k for extended you do not buy will easily cover that.

I agree. Its almost a gamble but in my experience things usually tend to go wrong around the 100k mile mark. On most of my cars, I haven't had a major problem until it was over 100k miles (knock on wood). By then, an extended warranty may be over.
