v1 saved my ass ... twice ...
v1 saved my ass ... twice ...
well we've seen this thread come up before ... my girlfriend bought me a v1 for my birthday, the day I got it, I hardwired it into my explorer, and haven't driven the acura since. i drove down to sioux falls on friday for work, then saturday headed a bit west towards mitchell to check out the farm my girl's dad just bought, and to shoot sporting clays at hunters pointe. On I-90 in SD, the speed limit is 75. I was going about 85, and I start to get these short bursts of Ka band every 15 seconds or so. This goes on for about 1 minute, and I cautiously slowed down. Finally I see a trooper about a half mile in front, driving towards me, and I get hit with the full blast ... I had a huge ass grin (I'm sure all v1 owners know this same shit eating grin) ... I called about 5 people laughing about it.
then yesterday, I busted out the acura for the first time in a few weeks, and hardwired the v1 with a second kit (so I only have to move the unit between cars). I posted for directions, and it took all of 5 minutes to do. Came back to find you punks posted the pics half an hour later
anyways, I leave my buddies house that night, (this is in north oaks, for those who know MN, for those who don't it is a private suburb of Minneapolis that is gated and everything), and as I'm leaving some dude in a shitty tweaked pickup blows by me on the road and tries to line up with me at a stoplight. I just shook my head at him, and rolled up my windows, and blew his doors off up to about 60, then hit the breaks ... he does the rice boy fly by ... and I let him stay in front and eat my HID's ... then I change lanes like I'm going to pass him but before I hit it (and now the kid is on it big time) ... i'm going about 55 in a 50, he's at least going 65 and pulling away, I get the full blast of Ka and I hit my breaks, down to 45, the kid had no idea he was getting blasted ... the cops passes us both, flips a bitch *right* behind me as he turns on the light, I get in the other lane, the kid immediatelys pulls over, i just cruised on by smiling, then got the fuck out of there ... unbelievable this thing ... :shakehd:

In the wee hours of the night, there are about 3 South Dakota troopers on patrol in the entire state. In Minnesota, there are about a dozen. This was several years ago, I remember they did a report on how it was nearly impossible for the State to operate with limited troopers and much of the areas were going without; relying heavily on SO and local police. I honestly don't believe there are more than a dozen SD State Police cars on the whole force. There are only two interstate Freeways in whole state (29 and 90). And in Minnesota there are three. (35, 90, 94).
I am totally surprised they were using Ka band in S. Dakota. Are you sure it was Ka and not K?

Wow I'm surprised cops can gun you coming from the opposite direction. I thought they had to be stationary or traveling with you (pacing you) to be able to get you.

They don't do much of that in town 'cause all of our expressways are divided, but the state troopers in KY do it all the time.

Nowadays, the sophisticated radar can clock you while the cop is moving in one direction (North) while you are moving in the opposite direction (South). If you think you got by, they can use the radar antenna on the rear deck to keep clocking you after you've passed (they don't need to turn around expect to come get you). The rear antenna can also clock traffic as it approaching the patrol car from behind going in the same direction. Finally you are ahead and the cop is trying to catch up to you, he can clock you with radar.
Today's radar has lane selection capability and no longer must show the speed of the fastest car or largest target (i.e. you can't hide in the shadows of a large truck). Add that to low-power Ka band and instant-on and you've got a real threat.
The principles of doppler radar are in effect and very accurate and hard to dispute (in fact in most states, you won't be able to challenge the radar in court, it is prima facia evidence). The only thing that radar still can't do is clock traffic at a 90 degree angle, has to be more parallel than perpendicular. Thank goodness.

) Troopers are probably the biggest threat next to the Edina cops. And I'm 100% sure it was Ka instant on. And in Minnesota you Missed about half the interstates ... 494, 694, 394, 35(E&W), 90, and 94.
