UniChip Possibilities
UniChip Possibilities
As I previously mentioned, I went ahead and started the leg work on getting the UniChip application for our car. I called Dastek's new US operations phone number and spoke to Tony. He instructed me to email Jack which I have already.
In my discussions, Tony mentioned that they currently cannot control the ignition signals and it doesn't have to do with the individual coils aspect. Something occurs around 5k revs which cause an inability to control the ignition signal. Because the J32A2 is not available in South Africa, Dastek's headquarters, they have no way to do data acquisition and correct the unit for this phenomenon.
However, if we can have someone in the Portland Oregon area supply their car to them for testing that can hook up a scope and the guys in South Africa can look at the data remotely and determine the appropriate methods to solve our application.
So who in Portland can donate their car?? I don't know the specifics on what they will do but most likely nothing to alter the car; just hook up and collect data.
Now, I am curious how any other company would claim to be looking at this application when there is no way to get this unit to work and this is from the manufacturer of the unit??

Damn... the 5K jinx.... Interesting Steve... very interesting..
At first I thought you were going to ask someone to head to South Africa with their CL..
.. but Portland is not that bad..
paging all Oregon CL owners

Just crate her up and put it on a cargo ship. Shouldn't cost more than $5k, more than the price of a stand alone DFI with expert tuning.

I would hope that you aren't reving it up if low on oil???
But the fuel cut is probably so that you can keep reving it.

By the way... is the Unichip capable of boost vs. timing/fuel control? i.e., can it handle larger injectors and timing-retard for a FI application? This will work well with the S/C'd folks.

They told me that they want to do it for all of the Honda ECU family.. so they are interested in my S2000 too.
Luckly, I can rotate my cars, because they might need it for more than a week. For data gathering, and sending info back to Africa for developing.

Also, they did perfer manual, but I don't recall seeing any around our area that is on this board that has one.. except for Kalin.. who is in CA now..
But he thinks auto should work just fine, just easier if it was manual.

SCALBERT,
I wish you all the luck and I too will be first in line for this if it happens.
I do have my doubts about this company though, your thread sounds frightenly familiar to a huge thread 1 year ago on v6accord, identical. We too provided a car for them from the Portland area and after months of BS back and forth and excuses because of the time differences between Africa and Oregon ( real good excuses ) they decided that it would be dropped because of the ignition issues and the lack of interest in the Accord and the CL community.
Again , good luck and I hope this works out for ALL of us, I just wanted to give you a little history.
Later - Andy

it wasn't until recently that the manufacturer, Dastek, had their own US office. Before then everything went through The Racers Group. So maybe with direct factory involvement thing will hopefully be different.

j/k....Seriously though, thank you scalbert for discovering this new lead on the chip. Since they are so close to where I live, I will be able to have good follow through with them.
I will report back later tonight once I have a chance to meet them in person, and check out their shop. I guess there is some paper work I have to go through before I hand over my car to them. We'll see.
I don't get any negative vibs from them.

you might want to do a search on the subaru forums about the Unichip. They really aren't the best solution IMO. check out nasioc.com and do a search on unichip problems. I personally had one on my wrx, I had it tuned also. It never ran perfectly. There was stumbling and hesitation at particular throttle points. Why not take a look at the Greddy emanage.

It's funny mention the WRX, because this topic was actually brought up in the meeting with them. And they express certain concerns they've learned from trying to work with the WRX guys during the development phase of the chip. But more on that later if you guys need to know more.
Steve, while I'm trying to gather my thoughts on describing what took place. Could you either give me a call, or I can call you so we can talk directly over what took place at the meeting? I have some questions for you as far as how we think we should presue this project as a group. You are the Guru around here, and since brought this lead to us, I'd like to discuss it with you first.
I will PM you my number, but I can call you also, if you like.
