Torsion bars for trunk lid

I have a question that I know someone will know. When I added a wing to my car, the trunk lid would not stay up. I found out later that they make a a stronger set for a trunk lid with a wing. Does anyone know how to tell the stock from the stronger ones? What the diameter of the bigger ones are? I'm actually still trying to figure out how to use struts to open the trunk, but need the backup option in case I can't find a way to fit struts in. Thanks.

ya be careful though, i have seen it on like 3 or 4 cl/tls now. the center brace/mount for the bars brakes off real easy. and if it has broken off then the trunk wont stay up even without the wing

what? the trunk literally will not stay up now that u got the oem spoiler?

Have you tried this?

there are bars by the rear speakers that u move to adjust the tension on the trunk support. like on most cars.

urs is probably on the light setting.

It's a bitch to move it but it will add enough to keep it up.tri

u'll see between the middle of the speakers where the bars cross over. there is a brace there that comes loose or breaks sometimes, and that loses the tension for the trunk to stay open.

LOOK to the back corners and u see the end of each bar... THAT is where u move it up to the next level. You will see a groove for the bar to sit in. that's what u should try first. IMHO

i haven't tried moving them all I know is they are under torsion and u gotta make it even stiffer, so I can imagine you just use ur hands and push it up and back and then it'll be in place.
Shouldn't require tools..i dunno what tool would help to accomplish such a task anyway

those bars are under a TON of tension. you cant move them with your hand. I installed the upgraded black bars with the honda tool and now im completely satisfied.

as for the middle brace, yes mine broke too. I drilled 2 holes into the brace, put some JB weld on the inner side of the brace and then screwed it in. Screws + JB weld = (hopefully) permanent fix

they dont go bad. if your trunk pops up at least 4 inches when you hit the switch, your fine.

your good. if you want, you can up the tension without ordering new bars by doing the things you said earlier and putting it on the higher setting.

I have the oem spoiler and when the bracket was broken, the trunk doesnt pop up at all

Lol

Great info... Need to adjust mine... my Accord must be set perfect, opens right up with the remote... perhaps adjusting my CL will prevent the bars from hitting my rear speakers... which they never did on my Accord.

mine only pops like a 1 or 2", but you can also try and space them out farther by putting a nut (for mine i fould like a hard little plasic tube, which was sized perfeact) under where it pushes on the bracket to add a little more tension, but like said before mine are on the weak side, before i adjusted it, the latch would let go and that was about it (it would kinda rest on the latch itself)

also for people with speakers hitting, how tall are your speakers

Next step is to use get rid of the springs entirely and use dampers.

Awesome info, thanks fuzzy! I'm definitely looking into that this weekend as I need a low cost project this weekend... saving for my timing belt overhaul :S

To be clear, it didn't hit with the stock speakers, only with my aftermarket ones.

Yes it's strange because my accord ('02 coupe) is almost identical and I had no issue. I'm guess these bars might be different because of the navigation unit mounted in the trunk though.

My Alpine Type-R's (6x9's) only just hit now, going to make a spacer plate like I had to in my accord's front doors or try something with plastic spacers.

I don't have the height off hand till I pull them them this weekend (damn I hate doing that!)... but I have the alpine type-R 6x9's.

I'd take out the speakers and get a 1inch think piece of wood. cut it out so u got urself a spacer. Wrap it in the same material as the back is, so it doen't looks weird... or Subbox black felt... and then problem solved.

Or drill a few hole and do the dampers.

but either way i'd hate to have a trunk that wil not stay open.

I use my car for work and service calls so i am in there multiple times a day.

I probably use it more than my door LOL

Has anyone actually used dampers on a 01-03 CL? I have looked alot trying to figure out how to put struts on, but no place to mount. TL's ,TSX's and honda's have more room and better openings to put one.

Ill take a look when I have a chance and figure something out. You may need to make some brackets.

I have tried different struts and positions. The Arms are really weak and can't go straight back like the TL and TSX. The only thought I had that would work was put a bar across arm to arm, but can't figure how to mount the struts to it.

there was a DIY for the TSX. I believe they used an 80 lb strut but if you have an OEM spoiler that needs the black torsion bars, you might need a 100lb, 120lb or 150lb.

I was able to find the DIY on the TSX and had them put the pictures back on it. Looking at it, the trunk design is different and the way they install the struts, I have tried on my car and won't work. There is not a way to put the strut straight in line with the lid arm unless you cut into the wheel well. I'll keep looking, seeing I have Alpine 6x9's that rub all the time and want to stop it.

man ive had kappas in there for over a year, if i were to add a 1'' spacer thats too crazy the speakers wont even hit it'll end up hitting the rear deck cover and start to rattle.

UPDATE: Had my friend align the car the other day and remembered to ask him to adjust the springs to the higher setting (I have the gray, non-spoiler springs)... Hell of a lot easier with the honda adjustment tool!

The result... bars no long hit my Alpine 6x9 Type-R speakers in the factory location!
