Tire wear question....
Tire wear question....
My car pulls to the right and I had the alignment checked...they say that it is in spec but one of the tires have worn in a way that will make the car pull to the right?!?! Can this happen....the tire I think might be the problem is on a rim that has a chunk taken out of it and might be slightly not round because it vibrates the steering wheel some. Has the bad rim messed up the tire and now makes it pull to the right?
Next can that tire be "fixed" buy mounting it on the rim on the other side of the car??

Well I think that same tire has a nil in it (damn the are aI work) and it may have run a few miles with low pressure a few times. The tire/rim has been balenced a few times and still shakes thats why I think its out of round. Dont know...
It is rare but it can happen due to belts shifting or a severely worn tire on one side of the car versus a new one on the opposite side .Theoretically tires have nothing to do with alignment set up however most shops will prefer to have both tires wearing the same on an axle .Verify tire pressure and if possible see if swapping tires left to right reverses the condition .If it does the tires are questionable and should be replaced .

Thanks Jens...The tires are directional so if that will still yield the same results then I will have them switched. I do have nails in both of the fronts (again curse the place I work) so when they have them off I will have them reverce sides to see if the problem shifts sids.
I was told by my advisor that the 6-speeds have a slight pull to the right. I've complained when I first bought the car and then after the first oil changed, they gave me a free alignment and the car still pulled to the right. My advisor said they dont' know why but it does that.
Jens, ever hear about that?

I also have some chunks off of some of my tire, along the outer edges of the tracks...only in the front. Am I taking turns too fast? It's only on the front tires and on the outside edge...nothing in the rear.

No, never hit the curbs...and there aren't too many potholes out here in the Phoenix area. I wonder if possibly taking a turn too fast and punching it as you get out of the turn would cause the rubber to chunk out. I've done it a couple times when it rained here last...wheels kept spinning and had very poor wet traction!
Sort of on the same topic..
So I have the Yokohama AVS dB's (directional tires) and due to the freakin' Comptech drop (which I still love, but guess a unfortunate side affect without the camber kits), I have uneven wear on the inside of the tire (camber issues which should be corrected by the camber kit, but i've just been too lazy to buy them and get them installed).
Needless to say, the fronts (and to a lesser extent but still problematic) the rears have more wear on the inside then the outside.
The ? is would it make sense (or would it be nonsense) to have my tires removed and re-installed/balanced on the opposite rim (where the wear would be on the outside). I think it would be so much easier to swap rims, but because they are directional that won't work.
Points
1) The Outside of the tire has almost not wear
2) The inside of the tires are not quite down to the wear bars yet, but if I keep them the way they are now, they definetly will be soon.

I have the CT drop and I do not have that much wear in the inside of the tires...almost none really. You might want to have envy thing looked at but I would think that swapping the tires would be ok....but I am no expert
The 6 speed cars should go straight like all other cars .The notion that the 6 speed cars pull to one side is incorrect .Under bery hard acceleration you may have influence from something called torque steer but this occurs to a greater or lesser degree in all FWD cars .Under normal acceleration and cruising the car should go straight .

I know Jen...Mine did from day one...untill I met up with the curb
So do you know about my Question...is it possible for a tire to wear (weather it be from a messed up rim or too low tire pressure)so that even if the car is alighned it will still pull to one side??

Didn't I answer that already ?but yes it can if the belts are shifted or the tire has excessive wear on one side .The car will tend to steer into the bad tire .it does not happen often but it can happen.

ok so lets say that is what happened and now the front passengerside tire makes the car pull right...they are directional so if I un mount it and re mount on the driver side will that help fix the problem or make things worse or make the car pull left??
