small compartment on top of radio JAMMED! Need to remove...Please help!!

The compartment that i am talking about is the one on non-navi cl's....It is directly on top of the radio and it simply slides out when you push it in. My problem is that my work ID got stuck inside of it and now it is holding the hole piece that comes out.....The piece is now jammes and it won't even click, it is jammed and it will not move. Anyway i can get this piece out w/out taking all the molding and radio out?...I need my ID for work!!! PLEASE HELP ASAP!!

Just rip it out. You may break it, but so what, they are cheap to replace.

If you want to finesse it you can slide a small flat item into the space & try to unjam it.

Depending on how bad you want this out and how quickly you need your ID, you can just listen to Fuzzy and force it out. However, if you're not pressed for time, I can check the service manual when I get off work and see if there's a less extreme way.

I would just pull it out. If you want, I'll be able to sell you mine in a few days as I'm putting factory Navi into my car (probably this weekend)

I believe the only way to take that out is by actually removing the wood grain plastics on both sides of the radio console...

To remove the wood grain, just open your console (arm rest) and pull up on that back end of the wood grain and work your way to the front. Then you will see that there is a screw on each side of the console that holds it in place.

Try using something thin and wide! Sliding it in the top edge (of the piece that comes out) to push the ID down and pull out the compartment while holding whatever you used in there until you can see the ID coming out with the compartment...

If you need it that quickly, I would just break it like Fuzzy said. But I find it hard that you cannot find an easier way to get into your building. If you can wait, you can just remove the HU out of the dash and open it then.

And NEVER put anything important in there again.

I can't remember for sure, but it's not that easy since the top of the radio actually catches the bottom of that piece and taking those screws out do abaolutely nothing until you take out the entire HU.

Admin setting of 5 minutes sucks...

EDIT: THE PICTURE SHOWS THE SCREW FOR THE SIDE PLASTIC, YOU NEED TO GET BEHIND THAT... Sorry, I don't have my car here to look at it. THe side plastic is easy enough to do if you are that pressed and have a half hour.

You may be able to get something in that hole on the side to push your ID down or even be able to have someone with skinny arms reach up in the back from down on the floor...

Oh, on the bottom of the compartment there are three little tabs that stick down into the radio (left bottom, center bottom, right bottom), be careful not to break them off.

Once you take out the two screws, you should be able to lift the compartment upwards (to avoid breaking the little tabs) and work it out.

Well i'm into work today. I get out @ 9pm and will see if i can take care of this tonight....The problem is that if i need to get my manager to come downstairs and get me i have to wait about half hr for her......I will try to do the trim tonight. if that does not work i will have to take out the hole head unit.....I just got my car...don't want to hurt it already..lol....i will probably end up taking the hole head unit out from the looks of it...b/c its not even clicking when you push back its just stuck in the click position if you knwo what i mean.

just gotta keep trying...i fought with it on and off for a good minute too...also a old cd...thats thin and strong enough to use...hope that helps....some finessing is required...

The same thing happened to me, but it was Les Claypool tickets and it was an hour before the show. I was able to get it to open slightly, then used my drivers license to hold the tics down and open the compartment. I couldn't take the cahnce of ripping the tickets.

I have never and will never put anything of value in that compartment again.

I turned mine into a CD holder. You can get 1 for a 99-00 TL that holds CD's.

I got the perfect pen...
Skillcraft...

It's a regular, black, ball point pen that is made from Skillcraft. The push button on the top (so you have no cover) type.
Fits perfectly in that pen slot. The only other thing I keep in that compartment is my registration, besides that, nothing!!!

I'm not sure what was in there originally, but I have a Zebra F-301 in mine and it fits perfectly.

Here's a pic taken from their website for reference:
