Rotor Issue - WTF

When u accelerate at a higher than normal rate the heat from the friction due to increased speed transmitts to the rotor , if u don't let that rotor cool down by driving a while( air travels thru the wheel openings ) before braking , the hard pad pressure on the hot rotor will cause a fuckin warp . It's not that hard to understand . And all CL's are fairly easy to accelerate faster than normal and not noticing it!!!

IF you are right, then you have a flaw in your argument, why don't other fast(er) cars have the problem? I think Acura realeasing a TSB pretty much sums up the issue, yet they still will not admit it when it comes to the dealer. I did NOT pay extra for the Type S so that I could pussyfoot it around town.

Explain; "Since your the Almighty", I bought my 99 cl 3 months ago WITH the brakes warped, I suppose the 60 year old granny that owned it before me drove like a bat-out-of-hell too? So I take them to the dealership to have them turned, (which they did under warranty), and 1 day after that they needed turned again?, sounds like you ASE certified folks need to learn how to turn a pair of rotors!!!

I'm going to take this thread in a different direction.
What are my options for replacement brakes and what is the cost and is this something that I can do myself?
I, of course, want to spend as little as possible to get a reasonable solution.

OK OK OK then , i guess I am the dumbest piece of shit on this board . Ant7701 (the Almighty) has admitted he's the dumbest piece of shit out there . Along with every fucking dealer out there that won't warranty your rotors!!! A TSB has nothing to do w/ it . All they are there for is to explain the corrective action , NOT a recall . If Acura had a problem w/ the casting of rotors , there would be a recall right!!! Especially cause it's a safety issue , they would definitly not risk being sued . As a matter of fact it's illegal to not issue a safety recall . Remember the Ford Explorers and their serious tire problem . Multi-million dollar fines and court cases later and their still replacing tires . Listen matt... I'm never said that u have to drive like a bat-outta-hell . Kepp ur words outta my mouth . Besides , how do u know the past of ur used car? I KNOW there are companies out there that have no problems w/ their rotors and there are the companies that do . Unfortunatly rotors are a wear-and-tear questionable topic . Find a dealer that cares about the customer , and maybe u will get a couple of warranty cuts . If not , sell ur Acura...what do I care! As far as the large trucks that generate more heat by stopping is concerned , have u ever seen how long it takes for one of those fucking trucks to stop . Their rotors are made specially for heavy duty towing and carrying loads . As far as faster cars are concerned , almost all of them have slotted rotors . Don't like it...then upgrade . Faster cars also have 18" or 19" wheels , sick stereo systems , lower ground clearance , better tires , and BETTER BRAKES . Buy a fucking vette then..or better yet go all out and get a Porsche . I mentioned above that I don't agree w/ Acura not warrantying rotors , cause I am also on the consumer end . However , look at it from the dealer point of view . WARPED ROTORS ARE CONSIDERED A DRIVER-ERROR RELATED PROBLEM . It's as simple as that , I don't like it and neither do you but stay the fuck off my back when I tell u what the dealer says . And for MikeS 18 , you can just buy slotted rotors for the front and use NEW acura pads . That should take care of the problem . It's fairly easy and u should be able to do it urself!!!

Smitty...I know there's a problem , however it's not a recall . A technical service bulletin just states that there's a bunch of car out there with the same problem . All they do is explain how to fix it . Every CL and TL is not guarenteed to have a brake pulsation so they issue a TSB . They have TSB's for everything u could think of from door sash trim peeling on TL's to rattles in the roof of MDX's . The TSB tells the tech what caused the problem and how to repair it to save time . That way techs aren't searching for three hours to fix these rattles .

So you speak for every Acura Dealer now. And anyone who doesn't believe you is ignorant.
If Acura is so willing issue recalls why didn't they recall the trannies? Isn't that a safety issue?
Yes TSB's are usually for info only. Why did Acura re-engineer new brake pads for the problem?
If you are a real ASE serv. tech. I am very happy you are in NY. You belong 3000 miles away from any car I own.

1. Trannys are NOT a safety issue
2. Acura never re-engineered new brake pads to correct the problem
3. I don't speak for all Acura dealers , however each Acura dealer has nothing to do w/ the warranty . American Honda is who decides weather or not to warranty anything . The dealer is just the middle-man . The rules apply the same for every Acura/Honda dealer in the U.S . Some dealers will issue a good-will rotor cut depending on the vehicle history , mileage , service work done , customer , etc...Whatever...don't beleive me , You''l just keep replacing ur rotors and I'll be cutting them myself for FREE!!!!!

And for Johny_2x...listen , just look around for another dealer . Find one that doesn't have a bunch of assholes working in it . Get in good w/ one of the service writers by doing a service , or other repairable action , but talk to the guy ya know . Don't just walk in , get work done , pay and go . Make an actuall contact so he will remember u when u come back . On the second visit mention the brake pulsation and u might get a good-will cut . If not then ask to speak to the service manager and talk to him calmly but at the same time bitch your head off . That should work . Also tell the new dealer that you've had some bad experiences w/ the other dealer . They love it when they see other dealers customer come to them!!!

Would it make any sense to file complaints with the NHTSA? It does appear to be a safety problem. If the rotors caused you to temporarily lose control and almost get into an accident wouldn't that be serious enough to complain.
Suppose you had an accident because the brakes went crazy when you applied them, scared the shit out of you so you released them and ran right into that car in front of you. If there were many complaints already filed with the NHTSA could you sue Honda for not correcting a known recurring problem that caused your accident?
Are there any people with knowledge about Hondas liability that would care to comment?

I can hardly stop laughing long enough to type this. Trannies aren't safety issues? Downshifting from 5th to 2nd at 80 mph and causing head on collisions isn't a safety issue? Acura DID re-engineer brake pads. Here you say it is American Honda making the decisions on warranty. Your less than helpful 1-800-eat-shit customer service rep says just the opposite. It is the DEALER to make the call. I'm glad to see you are all on the same page. Yet in your next post you tell someone to suck up to the service advisor to get warranty work done. Shouldn't help if American Honda is making the decision right? I love the "don't give a shit attitude" I have heard several people here say they will never buy another Acura. You might want to read up on what happens to a company when demand for their product drops.
To Smitty... Now I understand.......
Trannies are Not a safety issue you dumb-ass . The only reason Acura made a change in ANY brake pad was to correct brake squeel noise . And finally the dealer can call any decision they want but then asks American Honda to re-imburse them for the warranty pay . AMERICAN HONDA DECIDES WEATHER OR NOT TO PAY FOR THE FUCKING JOB YOU ASSHOLE!!!!!!!!
Brakes & Trannies, Brakes & Trannies. Guys, I'm not a tech, I'm not a mechanic, I'm just going to make a statement which many of you have probably looked over. The CL was originally designed and marketed to a Older crowd. I believe the target market was late 20's to late 30's. Not the people like us in the "High Risk Insurance Class." The reason I feel that the brakes are warping is because of hard braking. I know a good majority of us don't floor it, but do give it enough gas off the light to need to come to a reasonably hard stop at the next light. Even on the highway, we fly up to the batch of cars on the highway at speed exceeding 100mph. I do the same, Slowing from 120 to 60 in such a short distance, kills the brakes. Persons of a older driving class most likely do not drive like this.
As for trannies, I do think that Acura should have made them better, but they were once again not designed for our driving group. Half of you guys drive in SS mode on a daily basis, if not all the time. The trannies were probably not designed for hard downshifts.
The problem does not seem to be it the parts, cause acura can obviously build better ones. The real problem seems to be in the miscommunication between Marketing and R&D. The car was designed for a younger corwd, but it was marketed to a older one. Please don't flame me for stating my opinion, I've noticed there have been immature members going off on people because of a disagreement.

Trannies do suck and I never said that Acura's brakes were great either . Their horrible also however if you guys would take some of my fucking advise and lay off the brake pedal (not saying you stomp on it) a little bit you'll see what I mean . Drive your car and do this
1. Drive slow and increase your speed slowly up to 60mph and then lightly apply the brakes . Little or no pulstaion!!!
2. Floor it to 60mph and then apply brakes with a harsh firm foot and see what I mean.

My caddy can stop easily from 110, full pressure. AllI did was change to drilled rotors, and new pads.
It makes 1000000% difference in terms of brake fade, though you can smell the brakes, but overall they are a grerat improvement over the stockies..
They were powerstop ones, and were like 209 for the front.
MOVit had Porsche 911 GT2 brake upgrade kits for caddys, and maybe even for Acura/Honda. (that would be intresting)
Main thing is to BREAK IN your pads/rotors when they are new or resurfaced, or simly preform a brake burnishing procedure, which is 10-12 brisk stops form 40 in a row, quicly, and letting them cool for 2 huors, then doing it again, this helps to eliminate "ruff spots" I have doen this on occasion, as it is possible to be too gentle ont he brakes.

...Thank you oh-so-much for that wonderfully "accurate" analysis of every person that drives an Acura CL. If you would have read this post since the beginning you would understand that what we're all trying to say, is that WE DON"T BRAKE HARD, and OUR BRAKES ARE STILL WARPED!!!
Vettes don't have slotted rotors, they have slightly bigger ones, but they are only center vented like the ones on our cars, I have access to 2000 C5 I can take photos of if you want. The only vette that may have slotted rotors, and I even think that it does not, but I am not sure, (and not afraid to admit that I don't know) is the Z06, I know the 01's did not, but the 02-03 may be different. And how would wheels and tries have anything to do with braking, besides better tires making for a shorteer stop since they will hold their grip?
As for the lager vehicles taking loger to stop? GOOD...that furthers my point, that means the pads are pusing on the rotor for longer and generating MORE heat.
And guys, not all 22 year olds are idiots, I promise (of course if I am being one tell me),
...maybe just a little belligerent when arguing, that is all.

Acura should not have used the accord rotors and calipers. should have used the nsx rotors and calipers

This has gotta be the longest , most pointless argument anyone has ever had pn this board . We could be here for months and no conclusion . Your right , I'm right , your right , I'm right...and so on . Bottom line is Acura doesn't warranty rotors for warping some of the time . You may get a free replacement or cut with a warning , but after that ur on ur own . Maybe you guys should argue and insult your dealers like you do me , and maybe they'll do something about it . Sidemarker...how can u drive pretty hard but never be hard on ur brakes? How can u be gentle on ur brakes with all the SS downshifts and admiting that u drive hard?
I'm pretty sure my CL-S's rotors are warped. Anyone know of the best dealer in the SF Bay Area for getting the rotors fixed or replaced at no cost? I went to Oakland Acura once but these guys are pretty anal about fixing stuff under warranty without charging me something.
I just had my car at the dealer this morning for the warped rotor issue in which they replaced both front rotors and pads under warranty. They have resurfaced them before at about 6k miles and now I am at 11k. But next time I doubt I will even bother with a potential warranty issue and go straight to aftermarket brakes.
The service technicians did like the supercharger...
IMO, if you are over 24k miles you might rightfully be responsible to replace the brakes. I had warped rotors on my BMW at 8k which they fixed under warranty. At 27k miles they were shot again which I willingly paid to replace them. There is a point, regardless of what we feel may be right, which requires coverage of wear items.
