Removing the Cat???
Removing the Cat???
Is it ok to remove the cat and replace it with a straight pipe? Or would it mess up my lean/rich miztures?
The reason why I say this is if I can remember last. Isn't there an O2 sensor in our cats that monitor emissions and lean/rich readings? And doesn't the O2 sensor allow the ECU to self adjusts to allow better fuel economy and less emissions?
If it is ok to replace the cat with a straight pipe. Then is it just a simple remove and replace job. Or would I have to do extra work than just putting in a straight pipe?

You'll never pass emission testing if you do that. The Cat burns off much of the excess pollution that would be let out by the engine. But I see your from FL. I don't think you guys have inspection on your cars do you.
Also, I think it would be illegal to remove the cat.

I believe it is illegal for a mechanic to remove it. They could be fined heavily by the feds. I don't know if you would be able to stand the loud noise all of the time. Check into it thoughly first before you make any changes. We have no inspection in FL.
Ok ok. Here in Fla. we have no inspections and the thought of having my mechanic getting busted for removing my cat is obsurd.
But what I need to know is if my car will work without a cat. Or do I need to cat so that my ECU can regulate emissions and keep the rich/lean mixture right?
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there an O2 senson in the cat or is it just before the cat. Removig the cat will ovbiously remove the O2 sensor form the exhaust system, so is that ok, or would I have to have the O2 sensor in the straight pipe?
Tnx

Yes, there is an O2 sensors in the cat by removing the cat and even putting the sensor back in-line will cause a DTC to be set. Additionally, why remove it?? You can only gain a few ponies at best all while spitting out more emissions.
While working on a catalytic converter heat stress test at Calsonic we flow benched the converter. At 400 CFM there was only 3 - 4 Inches pressure drop. This equates to about 3 HP gain by removing it...
