And how does one do this, exactly? Did you have to put any carpet over it? Or was it just a small hole?

i removed the entire rear deck and 3rd brake light. i just used some cardboard, and traced an outline of the original deck on to the cardboard, and then went to a drapery/cloth store, bought about a yard of fabric i thought matched well, and then glue it on w/ fabric glue, and trimmed the edges. it goes in and out without removing the seats or anything.

here is another shot, when it stops raining i can take it out and take a picture, but its really self explanatory, not hard to do

keep in mind some states require a 3rd brake light. but if the car didn't come equipped w/ the light, they cant do anything, it looks fairly oem, so i doubt anyone would even know.

Very nice, I was wondering about doing that. Plus, if you have a spoiler with a brake light, there's no reason to have the 3rd brake light housing on the interior anyway.

well, not all of us have spoilers. or not all have spoilers w/brake lights. but this should still work to get rid of some of the rattle for everyone to some degree.

I put (2) small pieces of black felt tape on the plastic houseing, took about 1 minute and $2 and haven't had a rattle since......might be alot easier!

yes, after cutting out the initial outline, trace the 2 circles for the speakers, you can take the speaker grills off, and then cut out the holes, you can just place the fabric over the whole thing, it won't affect the sound quality

It looks so much cleaner with that 3rd light gone. Nice work.

Do you have any better pics? Maybe a quick DIY on how to do this? I want to do it. Then get my entire rear window tinted.
You have to cut out the 3rd brake light? Or does it bolt on? If I needed to put it back would I be able to?
I was thinking of a small fabric panel for the hole instead of covering the whole deck.

Thanks

fuzzy - the third brake light housing bolts into the metal in the rear deck. i believe it's 2 10mm nuts. as far as a DIY and stuff. i can, but it's not as hard as it looks. it's raining out like crazy so i don't want to take it out to take better pictures right now. basically just pull your old deck out, trace it on a big piece of cardboard and cut it out. cut out 2 holes for the speakers. i used 1 yard of fabric. lay the fabric out flat. spray it with fabric glue. then spray one side of the cardboard. center the cardboard on the fabric in such a way that you can fold the fabric completely in half. then spray the topside of the cardboard and spray the other half of the fabric. fold it over. go slowly, fabric glue is sticky. make sure to flatten it nicely taking your time. now you can trim the fabric. i left about 1" extra fabric around the cardboard. you can either sew the ends of just make sure you glue them a bit more.

i'll take some better pictures once the weather clears up.

This thread scares me because every where I've looked online it states that if the vehicle was manufactured in the US after 1986 the 3rd brake light is required which means if it came on the vehicle it has to stay on the vehicle. If your CL does not have a spoiler with the 3rd brake light built in then removing your 3rd brake light is just another reason to have the fuzz pull you over. Not only that but there's a reason the 3rd brake light is required on US vehicles after 1986, because it saves lives. Please think this one out before you do it.

If you have a spoiler with a brake light in it, the 3rd brake light in the cabin isn't even hooked up and serves absolutely no purpose, might as well take it out.

i guess you can lecture me about a brake light, while you install a CAI and headers obviously to make your car faster, so driving your car faster is ok?

btw, fuzzy, last i recall florida doesn't do inspections, so i dont see a reason to need to place it back. i was just going to wire up a simple LED strip that plugs into the factory plug for the light and just tape an LED bar in the back window for when i need it in during inspection.

I'm not trying to lecture you or anyone dude, and the point I'm trying to make isn't about inspection, I'm just pointing out that removing the 3rd brake light is just one more reason for a cop to pull you over even if you're obeying all traffic laws, including the speed limit, and I think we would all like to avoid getting pulled over if we can. Plus with as many old farts driving around my neck of the woods I would personally never take my 3rd brake light off. The brighter the brake lights the better so I don't end up getting rear ended by grandma and grandpa in their Olds 88.

I still haven't got around to doing the rear dash but I do have my entire rear window tinted. I watched the guy do it and i was a PITA! You can't see that it was ever there though. Check out my pics in my links and you'll see.

I would agree if I didn't have spoiler with a brake light. But I do. And my stock brake light is disconnected. So to me it doesnt matter.
