Reckless vs. Speeding

sup yall....I was wondering if any knows how long speeding stays on your record vs. reckless? I know reckless is on ur record for 11yrs...Joe, can you look it up in ur dmv book for me?

also, do u think paying $700 for a lawyer to get my reckless knocked down to a speeding is justifyable? I don't mind paying $700 now, rather than have my insurance company raise my premiums or even drop me. Do you know if insurance companies treat speeding and reckless differently? or is the difference minimal?

I need to let my lawyer know by friday if i want him to represent me. I've talked to my friends about this and they all seem to be 50/50 on this one. any advice would be appreciated!

You should defiantly pay the 700 and have the charge reduced. I got a reckless driving 2 years ago and my lawyer took care of business. All I got was 6 months of supervision.

Most insurance companies treat reckless driving like they do a DUI. Very bad. Rates will go up big time.

what did your lawyer do for you? did he plea bargain for you? what did you end up getting charged with? speeding or reckless? just curious.

1. It is true, Insurance companies look at reckless driving as one of the worst things you can do.

2. You are getting your ass ripped off for $700, only to get the charges REDUCED?? That's bullshit. As an attorney, my advice is to shop around for other lawyers and tell them you want to beat the charge, not reduce them. Tell them you want a guarantee of no points or your money back. Lots of lawyers in my area specialize in traffic citations and have friends in the State Attorney's office. This results in you being one of those "favors" that they make trades on.

Look at it this way: First you will pay your lawyer $700 to reduce the charge, and then you'll pay an additional fine to the state for speeding, and then you'll pay additional premiums to the insurance company. You are getting F-U-C-K-E-D.

Conclusion: SHOP AROUND

do we have any lawyers on this board in the VA area that want to represent me?

In most states (I've lived in MI, FL and CA) the ticket stays on your record for points purposes for 2 years, but insurance companies can hold them against you on your "insurance record" for 3 sometime 5 years. As far as reckless staying on longer, I have no info. I do know that a "careless driving" ticket I got back in 1986 only stayed on my record for 3 years. Careless is 1 notch down from reckless.

Needless to say, I'm more careful now. :-)

A moving violation (speeding) stays on your record for 3 years on California (at least that was the info I got a few years back). I had called the insurance company and wanted some info on their policies and rates.

A good lawyer can work wonders -- you might save money in the short and long term...

WOAH!! 700 thats wayyy too much man.

oh in va anything over 80 is considered reckless. wether it be 5 miles over or even 10 miles over anything over 80 is reckless. and is 6 points.

speeding 10-19 miles is 4 points and stays on your record for 5 years.

and speeding gernerally(no speed indicated) is also 4 points and 5 years.

okay there are two kinds of 6 point violations according to the dmv booklet.

first one is reckless driving-speeding 20 or more miles above the speed limit and the 2nd one is speeding 20 mph or more above the posted speed limit. the latter one is still 6 points but only 5 years on your record.

Yo not looken good.

I got a reckless last year 81/55 on 66. I got nailed w/ reckless and coughing up loot to insurance.

yeah man, $700 is a shit load of money to just get hte charges reduced...i'd pay $700 if he could get the charges dropped, but I doubt he will or he can do it...anwyays, how much did u insurance go up when u got convicted of reckless? thats the only thing i'm worried about cuz i don't wanna get dropped or raped on premiums...

i think i'm gonna go into court k-solo and hope that 1.) cop doesn't show up or 2.) cop doesnt bring his speedometer calibration or 3.) the judge is cool and lets me get off w/a speeding...

what do yall think? should i talk to another lawyer?

Ever been to traffic court in VA? Half the police force is there. No Joke. VA State Cops ALWAYS show up. ARlington and Fairfax police ALWAYS show up...unless there's some big emergency somewhere else. VA needs these tickets to justify their overabundant police force. You'd figure they should be out hunting real criminals. Getting rid of the gang problems, etc.... But Noooo....they spend a lot of time catching speeders and reckless drivers instead.

It's all about the revenue in VA. Same with MD. (FYI, I'm licensed to practice law in MD/DC/NJ...sorry..can't help you in VA).

So...shop around...$700 is a rip off. Find a good lawyer in VA. Read the back of your ticket...you can probably get a continuance of your court date.

speeding comes off i think after 3 years from the date of the ticket.
cause my dad had a parking lot fender bender(a civic was coming around the corner of the parking lot and dad had his dakota with big reese hitch and ball on it and dad backed out nailed her bumper)(never scratched the picked but did like 800 bucks in damage to the civic. dad said that ball of the on the hitch about went through that radiator hahahahha)(that's about just as bad as reckless op) cause he got sited(that was 3 years ago this week) and he just got it taken on this week.
so he's happy.
