real or scam?
No its real, they use it at the police department that I work for. However if you attempt to purchase one you must provide them with your credentials and organization, and they will verify them with your department before it will ship. So in other words the general publics purchases would be rejected. Thats the way it works with companies that sell badges as well. You must fill out a form with your organization info so that they can verify your employment.

nevermind, got this off teh faq:
Why is it necessary to execute a “Restricted Sale” Agreement?
FAC of America will not sell traffic control products to individuals that are not legally authorized to use the devices. However, we provide a “no obligation authorized distributor agreement”, that will qualify you to inventory and sell the MIRT to Authorized users, as determined by County, State and Federal laws.
The “Restricted Sale” agreement is a tool used by FAC of America to determine the authenticity of the buyer, and to prevent unauthorized individuals from illegally obtaining the product. We highly recommend that you take advantage of the huge opportunity to sell this cutting edge technology, that is the perfect answers for departments with limited budgets and so many more authorized users.

Besides it won't work on every single traffic light. The system needs to be equipped. Most places I've lived have them, but don't expect it to work everywhere. I don't think it is illegal to have one, but it would be illegal to use one. It would be very easy for a cop to catch you using it because when in use, depending on your system, sometimes a secondary white spotlight flashes (you've seen those little lights on the traffic light poles). In any case, only the one traffic light turns greens/arrow, ALL OTHER LIGHTS (including oncoming traffic) are on red. That's a dead giveaway.
I got news for you guys...they sell these similar kits for motorcyclists too...
Now, those kits say nothing about Law Enforcement use only...maybe I'll try & buy one...see what happens, etc...

This is true guys.. Certain traffic lights have IR sensors implanted in them which pickup a certain frequency or light spectrium. I know this because during Hurricane Andrew, my friend and I helped outselves to a traffic light at one of our major intersections here in so. miami. When I removed the YELLOW lense to replace the broken bulb, (which to my supprise it was NEON!!!) there was a little IR sensor mounted to a PCB board.
Back in the day, a friend of mine had one. Looks like a little garage door remote. It emmits IR. However you might need a booster for daytime use.
Motorcycle riders sometimes have these, since some bikes do not have enough metal to cover the pavement to trigger the sensors. I know this because I ride and have to run lights ALL THE TIME!!!
