Got them aligned. They're actually alot brighter than I had initially though they would be. There is plenty of light even with the low beams off.

I ended up using the wiring that came with the fogs. I zip-tied the stock wiring to the side. I spliced the relay into the side marker. The fogs come on with the side marker (1/2 turn of the light switch) and can be used as driving lights w/o the zenons. The only thing I don't like about doing it this way is that the fogs flash when I lock/unlock the doors ('cause the sidemarkers come on too).

 

haha dont worry... i have the same problems... so usually i just leave the fog light on and turn off the low beam when i lock my car. so when i open my door with my remote, it will be sorta like the MBZ style anywayz... HOW THE HELL DID U GET UR CLEAR corner so BRIGHT?????????? 12W?? they make 12W bulbs for that SIZE???

 

I used a PIAA 18W "W2" bulb. It's the same thing as a Polarg M6. It's the same bulb people use in the fake fogs. To keep it looking "cleared" I used some high-temp silver paint and painted the very tip of the bulb. This allows the bulb to look pretty much silver when off (a little blue tint to the corner) but appear about 90% as bright as an unpainted bulb. I did the same for the amber turn signal bulb. Painting the whole bulb looks a little better, but it blocks about 50% of the light.

 

very cool...u used the 19224's for sidemarkers...how did u manage to fit the bulbs in there?? u open the socket a little more??

a suggestion...instead of splicing the wires from sidemarkers to road lamps, how bout u just run another wire to a fog switch like on the TL

yea it does flash when you lock and unlock your doors, its cool btw, and mine has been running fine for 1 whole year and the bulb hasn't burnt out yet or anything so don't worry...

 

Very clean looking install. Thats got to look hot driving with just the sidemarkers and the fogs on. Nice job!

So how did the aiming process go?

I'm tempted to start this project myself, but I'm still concerned about getting them pointed in the right direction.

If you said the fog light basically 'snapped' into place along its seam into the hole you cut in the road lamp housing, I don't see how the direction it points can be changed.

More insight would be much appreciated.

 

While aiming the lights I realized that the position into which the fogs "snapped" would result in the lights pointing outwards (both left and right). I actually ended up enlarging the holes ever-so-slightly so that I could rotate the fogs more toward center. This also allowed me to aim them up and down. As far as getting them in just the right position, I simply did alot of trial and error. I used common masking tape to hold the fogs in the housings. I'd then pop the housings back in, turn them on, and adjust accordingly again if needed. When I was happy, I used Marine GOOP to secure them permanently. I ended up aiming the left fog a little lower than the right. I like the extra light of the higher right fog (lights up the sidewalk/roadside) and the lower left light doesn't blind oncoming traffic. Hope that helps.

I really like the Sub setup you have. Could you tell me a little more about it.... where you got it, how much, how much to install, etc. I like the fact that you can adjust the bass level and the knob looks clean. You audiophiles out there will think Im crazy, but I have no problem with the fact Bose system except for the fact that I would like a little more bass. Some more info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

 

I bought the Basslink on Ebay for about $240 with remote (shipped). That was a pretty good deal. The install was very easy (in retrospect). This was my very first venture in removing the back seats, wiring stuff, etc. and I came out ok - so you should find it easy too. Do a search. There are some awesome tutorials on this site for installing the Basslink. As far as the remote install is concerned, I simply took out the little tab (a couple of screws), used a dremel to remove the wings of plastic, drilled a tiny hole in the tab, and stuck the remote dial thru the hole. I used a little crazy glue to secure it in place and put it all back together. If you want pix, PM me and I'll hook ya up! My Yahoo! account sux for posting pix.

BTW, I also thought the Bose sounded good once I got the Basslink. However, I went ahead and put a pair of Alpine 6x9's in the rear deck (ebay is addictive). It really did help with the midrange alot. Plus, rearseat occupants don't get to hear the tweeters from the front so it helped out in balancing sound in the back. The Alpines were only $55 shipped.

so let me get this straight u painted the piaa bulbs then u didnt hvae to take the amber sides out? or did u take them out

 

I cleared the headlights a couple of months ago. I wanted a brighter corner bulb (18W PIAA W2) and I also wanted a legal amber blinker bulb. When the lights are off with these bulbs(unpainted), the corner has an orange and blue reflection from the coatings on the bulbs. Since I wanted a clear (silver) look to the whole thing during the day, I bought some high-temp silver paint and painted the ends of the bulbs. This greatly reduced the amount of color the bulbs reflected in the housings when turned off (although not perfect). When on, the bulbs still are very bright since they aren't completely painted. Some people paint the entire bulb to maximize the "cleared-corner" look at the expense of brightness at night. Call it a compromise.

How hot do the new lights get? Any worrys about burning the stock housing with the aftermarket fogs? I have PIAA 1100s and think the heat would cause the stock housing's reflective coating to discolor. I was going to mount them without the stock housing, but it would not look as good.

You mentioned using the “GOOP” to hold things together, but are the mounting flanges of the lights actually attached to anything to prevent movement?
Your picture from behind just shows the light housing sticking through the hole you cut out and the mounting flange is hanging loose.

I had the same question. My only reservation in doing this project is that the fogs won't be secure enough to prevent bouncing. So, did you end up using the flat mount to the car?

 

The housing plastic gets warm, but I have no problem putting my hand on it. The area that actually touches the housing does not get hot at all...in fact, I held it in my bare hands just to test it after about 15 min of continuous "on". No probs with discoloration so far (unlike the Polarg M6's I had in there previously).

 

It's kinda hard to explain, but the flanges actually get pinched a little in the holes I made in the housings. The flanges are tightened so they aren't loose or floating around. The GOOP is extremely strong stuff. The lights aren't going anywhere!
