Radar or no radar you are going to get caught There are just too many approaches to catching speeding cars. Radar is just one of them. There is a wonderfull thing called laser, its an impulse and is aimed directly at one car. So if you radar is showing laser and you are speeding you can start pulling over your speed was determined. Then there is "pace", where an unmarked police car is just driving behind you or couple of lanes over and behind you to determine your speed.

But if you want to have something get a V1.

The 'pace' as you state is VERY easy to get out of in court. Its his word against yours.

V1 is your best defense and it does pick up laser and it does give you a good fighting chance.

V1 all the way. Gave me ample time to react to cops on the highway. Expensive but worth every penny and paid for itself and then some.

Hey guys, Thanks for the replys, I know the V1 is the best, but I was specifically wanting to know about the Passport Solo, which is about 1/2 the price of the V1. And I know traditionally Escorts are very high rated as bell.

As far as the cordless escort goes, I have heard bad things. Mike Valentine comments on cordless detectors somewhere. Obviously he can only be so objective, but it's still seems to be a good point.

I have a 5 year old Uniden and it works just fine. I spent less than $50 refurbished and it has saved me many times. You just have to pay attention. Valentine may be great and Passport must be good but I am doing just fine with my ol' Uniden. It's kinda old just like me!

Isn't there another passport series that was close to the V1, about $100 cheaper, and smaller?

And when is the new redesigned V1's supposed to be released?

I purchased a V1 exactly 1 day after I bought my CL-S and have had great results. I have been saved countless times while pulled over only once after being tagged with instant-on while in the suburbs.

I was going about 65 in a 40 when the V1 went nuts and I slammed on the brakes. Cop clocked me from behind at 58 or 59. (and I had a damn good reaction time) He asked me how fast I was going and I told him, "Well, after my radar went nuts and I hit the brakes, I was going about 55 when I looked down at the speedo...." I guess he appreciated the honesty and let me off with a warning! He also had to give me the "you know those things don't work" line. I smiled and just said, "well, I guess not" and drove off. They DO work ... just not when cops have finished their donuts and have a spare hand to flick the radar on and off.

Aside from the great range, I would most definitely say the directional alerts and number of bogies display are the best features. Every detector in the world lets you know when you are being hit by radar. But how many detectors besides the V1 let you know if the radar is in front, behind, or on the sides?

Good thing the V1 works, because I also like my annual insurance rate of $720 on my CL-S. Gotta love State Farm and small towns

Interesting, Mike Valentine, I think that was his name, used to work for Escort. He quit and created his own company, Valentine. Well, if money is an issue, just save up a little longer. I think the V1 got the highest marks of all the detecters tested in one of the car mags. It comes enclosed in metal housing and build quality is impeccable. If some new techonolgy comes out for the V1, they can take it back and upgrade it for a small fee. 360 degree detection, bogey counter, strength meter, etc,.. Not trying to sway you, just stating the facts.

I have an older V1 and the new Escort 8500... I use the 8500 in the CLS. But, both work good.

Let me tell you a little known fact about the Solo. Because it is cordless and it works off of batteries, it has a reduced range and it is less sensitive.

If you plug in the optional 12v cord, you'll get a better radar detector overall (more responsive, more sensitive) that's still only about half that of the V1.

Buy the V1 and don't look back at a Solo. The best place for a Solo (where I use to mount mine) is in the rear window facing backwards.
