power steering problem!!! DAMNIT

ok so i just put on the OBX pulley for the power steering and drove around.. all was good.

2 hrs later i start the car and i hear a weird noise... pop the hood and it's coming from the power steering pump.

So i think i FUCKED the bearing up??

um wtf can i do to fix that...

please help, the noise is wreched OMFG i cannot stand the noise.

it's somewhat intermittent. if u turn the wheel when car is stopped u can hear it get worse also.

is there a bearing kit I can put on or what?

Check your new belt and make sure it's the right one?

RAJCA where is the bearing to fix the pulley?

I tried last night to get it off with a wrench and probably fucked the bearing right there.. it just so happens it took a day to show the signs of devistation

i used the SAME belt because it is basically the SAME size. I didn't tighten the belt tight at all and it just started happening. I went to the DLR they told me to tighten it more actually so i did. and the noise proceeded.

So is it the bearing for sure???????

also when i turn the wheel it makes the noise more.

It's also somewhat intermittent so you may be right about the fact it's the bearing.

ARE YOU SURE THIS WILL FIX THE PROBLEM???

how do i know if it is something else inside the power steering??

thanks for all the replays guys reallly.

never replaced teh bearing in a ps pump. but it should be right behind the pulley. is it like a loud squeal noise?

like an annoying deeep WAAAA from a 20 year old baby it sounds like.

and when u steer u can hear it MOAN even MORE.

is that what a bearing sounds like on a pulley?

I mean I fix bearings on electrical motors and they make all sorts of weird noises.

but this... i have no idea. can someone fil me in please

Its hard to tell without hearing it. I would think a bearing would be higher pitched screech almost. The "baby" sound you say sounds more like low fluid or possible air in your line... Maybe its a dumb question, but did you check your fluid....

yea i did that and it's topped up. no leaks... nothing

Like, it's the same sound u hear when u turn too far (on some cars) it makes that deep WAAAAAA noise. that unmistakable noise.... from the power steering?

it's that noise basically.

the faster u spin it the more the WAAA loses its deep WAAAAA sound.. the noise goes slightly higher pitched

Well the only other thing I can think of is bleeding it really well and see if that gets rid of it. Its possible when you were changing the pulleys and messing with the belts that you might have loosed a hose or a fitting. I know I wasnt the gentlest when I did my pulleys. But if that doesnt work, I think you might be SOL.

no I didn't mess with hoses or anything this was because of me... :-(

I'm sure of it. I must have somehow inadvertently damaged the pump when attempting to get the 19mm nut off at 10pm in my garage with a wrench, using the back of a ratchet to hold to oem pulley still.

all because I couldn't wait 12 hrs. wow.

what sound does a bad bearing make?

cause mine can get louder or quieter without even steering sometimes... so it may just be the bearing

and i heard little ticking/clicking w/e u wanna call it when i did that.. just moving it 100degrees back and forth.

so I'm gonna get a new power steering pump... well another one i should say.

found it for 80$

YEA that's what mine sound like.. a supercharger LOL.

I played with the bearing and there is NO PLAY at all, so i doubt it's the bearing.

and the used one has 220K on it..

I can get a new one for 375 so I am gonna wait it out and then get that new power steering pump when I got some coin to blow.

right now i'll just have to bear with that obnoxious sound.. damnit

first of all progression, what did you use to keep the pulley from turning when you loosened it and then retightened, you may have screwed up the bearing or something there

just saw it , but yeah you proably screwed it up somehow,
it puts a strange sideload that the p/s pump was never designed to handle (one application where an impacts excells, no sideloading)(could have actually also bent the shaft too, and it's letting air into the p/s system, ethier way the p/s pump needs to be repaired/replaced

that might be the vanes themselves inside the pump, hard to tell with out actually being the one to hear and feel it

yea man new pump is getting bought on friday. no waiting around.

And yes I believe I did bent the internal shaft ever so slightly... but that's all it takes unfortunately.

W/E

after buying a new one I should never have a pump problem again. ;-)

i saw someone else doing the same thing before on here, but they were putting in a new mount though, but still had pryed against it, which still screwed it

and it is also the reason i prefer an impact for loosening and tightening that nut, so no unusual side loads put on it (and you just keep the pulley from turning with your hand)(i had to remove and reinstall my ur pulley like 3-4 times (seemed to have a slight wobble to it, but it was the pulley itself, and the factory pulley does the same thing btw), and never had an issue with damaging the pump, but i did use a impact afterall)

yea see that's how I got the pulley off this morning... with an impact.
if i had waited the odds are i'd be 400$ richer... whata shame LOL

OH well.... I am going to paint my new pump before install so it can add to the already sexy engine bay. lol

mine as well gain something out of all this BS

might have been air in the system but that should have gone away after a few turn of the wheel.

x2, but air should have never even gotten into the system in the first place (cause the system should have never been opened in the first place), but as progression said, probably a good chance once everything gets cold again (as the clearences change again or the seal becomes too hard to seal correctly when cold)

only way to tell is time though, and putting it through normal daily driving routine

i brought it to the DLR and they checked the tension. I tightened it right there to what they specified and it did nothing.... got home..and played with the tension and inspected everything and nothing changed..

went for a 30 min drive and GONE

I started the car up just now and it's only 2degrees C and THE NOISE is gone.

I'm attributing this outcome of events to KARMA...

I've been a pretty good boy lately :-)

oh no... a corroded 10 year old bolt. I'm doomed lol

I throw a picture up of the entire engine bay and u focus on what appears to be a rusty bolt.

you got ur priorities straight lol

and FYI it's not even rust, it's surface discoloration. not actual corrosion.

ummmmm...... we don't get that here just fyi, bolts still maintian there coating the entire life of the car, so no rusty bolt here (including on a car with 295K miles, still has the origional coating on it's bolts)
