O2 sensor install w/ pics
O2 sensor install w/ pics
Round 1 yesterday...
after the first 45 minutes, the only thing i succeed in accomplishing was snapping my jack...if it snapped about 30 seconds later, my face woulda been a pancake
...so off to sears i went for a floor jack...wound up bailing on the install alltogether for an emergency
Round 2 this morning...
found out i didn't have the 22mm wrench for the sensor, so off to Sears again to get a full set

here's what the new sensor looks like...

bracket minus the 10mm bolt...

old sensor...

old vs. new...

nice fit...

connector to ECU...

finally, my stripped jack

so to summarize, an install that originally was supposed to take an hour tops took 2 days, 2 trips to Sears, about $225 worth of tools (3.5 ton floor stand and a 26 piece wrench set), and a busted jack
muahahahaha some of my finest work yet

well it wasn't the plugs misfiring...it was the sensor...just burned out after 3.5 years...it's a warranty item

man, don't ever use the stock jack for working under the car! Always, ALWAYS use jackstands and a floor jack that exceeds your cars weight by at least 50%. For me, I'm too anal, I use 2 3-ton jackstands per side per corner (yes, 8 to hold the entire car up)
To give an example, when working in Texas in an ER in San Antonio... some crazy guy decided to change his brake rotors using a stock jack. Well, to make a long story short... He CLEANLY amputated his right leg when the car fell. He died right under me as I was the one helping him breath with a bag & mask.

yeah almost learned my lesson the hard way :shakehd:...thought i could get away with it...never do that again
Shawn...was getting the staredowns by all the Asians lol...people even slowed down while passing to watch :weird:
TypeR...there was no code...the new toys Acura's got show specifically what the problem was along with all the car's diagnostics on a portable flatpanel display using Microsoft CE

Scooter you're crazy and I hope you used jacks as well just in case the 3 ton jack gives
my friend almost got killed doing something like that...he used the 2 ton jack but he sat on grass which seemed like it was holding...l as he is looking under the car me and my friend notice that the car is gradually sinking at which we grabbed him from his ankles and pulled him out...at first he was like yo what the fcuk...but once he say the car sinking quickly he was like forget this

This might be a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway. When I jack up my car, I use a 2 1/2 ton jack. I use the jack points just behind the front and just in front of the rear wheels. Once the car is up, where do I put the jack stands? Since I'm using the main jack points to hold the car up I can't figure out where to place the jack stands.
I had my Nissan Xterra roll off the jack when I was taking off the last two lugnuts. What sucked was that I felt it move, let go of the wrench and backed away. (The tire was stil on, with the lug wrench pointing straight down. So needless to say, the Xterra remained up in the air, but now it was held up by the tire iron. Which I needed to jack the dam car back up, which I couldnt do because it was stuck in the ground holding my car up.
So I slowly drove foward to dislodge the iron, only to hear my tire iron snap and fling across 2 lanes of traffic. Yeap, a nice 3 hour tire change for me.

your saying acura diagnosed the problem, and gave you a new o2 sensor, assuming youd return the old one for warranty?
did it fix your problem?

and yes, problem solved...reset the ECU by unplugging the battery, punched in the radio code to unlock it, and i was off and running
looking back, it was a friggin circus...mistake #1, i wasn't FULLY prepared...i took apart and put back together the old sensor 4 times over the course of the weekend (once to go to Sears, once to tend to an emergency, once to go back to Sears a 2nd time, and once for the actual swap)
mistake #2, i went into the install thinking it was going to be a cake walk and tried to rush through it...something like this takes time and patience if you have basic tools since 1, you don't have quite the leverage you need to get under the car and take out the 10mm bolt, 2, unplugging the sensor wire from the ECU and the bracket is all about feel (you can't really see anything), etc.
so if anyone in the Queens/Long Island area needs to have this done and want to do it yerself, i'll be glad to help out
i give many thanx to Jens for guiding me through the whole process

constant Check Engine Light, followed immediately by VSA and triangle light despite numerous resetting of ECU
unfortunately, there's not a single independent variable to pinpoint that it's the sensor unless you have an OBDII

you misunderstand...the new toys at Acura don't show a code...they show the actual feature that's failing along with all the car's systems in a window you can scroll through...when it's hooked up to the ECU, it's constantly showing numbers as well as green & red lights to signify which systems are on or off, such as AC, cabin-ights, etc.
specifically to the O2 sensor, there are 2 items for it, one a green/red light, the other an actual measurement...at first when you start the car, it's a green light, and the numbers were around 0.4...then after a minute, they started bouncing all over...1.26, 0.5, 0.2, 1.1, and then the red light would flash, you look on the dash, and sure enough, VSA and triangle light are on
i can't really help you with a specific code number...why don't you just call your local service dep't and ask...or call Park Ave.

I just changed my o2 sensor too, but I had the shop reweld the bung a few degrees off so the sensor wouldn't touch the oilpan. I had a check engine light and the worst fuel consumption, less than 200miles to the tank. I'll try to shoot some pics. kudos for doing it yourself.
