New Supercharger Pulley

I got back in town from DC late last night and was not aware I had received a package until this morning. As soon as I saw it I knew that it was my new pulley but I didn't get a chance to put it on until this evening.

Below are pictures of the new and base Comptech SC pulley. The overall diameter is not significantly different but the value we are shooting for is measured at the top of the ribs. This new pulley has taller sidewalls which reduced the apparent size difference. I went from the 3.8 Comptech base pulley to the new 3.5 unit. I am also running the HBP (alternator pulley).

I only went for a quick run as I was needed at home but the initial impressions are good. Boost ran up to about 7.5 PSI quickly and I wasn't fully into it. I suspect that a little over 8 PSI will be the maximum as expected. Power was great but not fully explored. But what I was really looking for was immediately seen; the A/F ratio went to the low 13's at near WOT. 13.1:1 and 13.2:1 were the average values during the quick and not quite WOT runs I made.

Probably the most interesting part is that I did not hear any knock at all. Even though it was going leaner the engine had no audible knock. That is a true testament to using an intercooler as opposed to not using one.

I came back and hooked up the e-Manage software and added 10% pulse width addition from where I was currently at. This should bring me back into a safe A/F ratio. I also added back in some retard until I feel safe about the fuel supply. These will be adjusted through the following week and hopefully in time for a new dyno session next weekend.

As a side note I also tested the bleeding function to lower the fuel pressure. I determined that a 0.125 bleed is needed with a one foot distance off the additional port on the FPR; more on that later.

Below are pictures of the new pulleys along with newer pictures of the IC installation:

What A/F are you shooting for?

To be safe with the stock 10.5 CR, I want to stay in the 11.5:1 - 12.0:1 A/F ratio. It may be a bit richer than needed and I will adjust it if needed. But for the time being I'd rather side on the rich side for a good comfort margin.

Good job Steve!

I wouldn't recommend driving around too much at 13.x A/F. At least don't get on it for extended periods of time - although its not going to harm the motor, it does allow for excess combustion-chamber temps.

Anyways, it should post good #'s on the dyno - 370 to 380whp is my guess; do you know how much your S/C flows at its new-found velocity?

Thanks Ramanan,

That is why I went back and added pulse width in the e-Manage. This should richen it more than needed but I will see for sure tomorrow.

We'll have to see about the power numbers and I would be happy if your assumtion is correct. This new manifold design does seem to flow better at the higher revs. The shorter and straighter runner path is probably the reason.

As for flow numbers on this blower. I suspect that it should be at least 550 CFM (maybe upwards of 600CFM) based on the data from the Magnuson's website. The blower should be turning at over 16,500 RPM near redline.

Not trying to sound like a moron here, but what is really different about your Motor, besides the obvious S/C and Intake. I guess I haven't seen other pics of your engine bay, but doesn't look like other S/C 3.2's I've seen. Just curious.

The current differences are that I mounted the reservoir but I don't think that is what you are referring to. The manifold is completely different which includes the IC. Below is the stock manifold with the SC:

I just got back from another test drive and the A/F ratio is back at where it should be. The power was also impressive making tests in 2nd worthless. 3rd was pulling strong with no knock present. 4th will be the tell all for the knock aspect but I won't get to try that until later on the highway.

I'll test it out through the week and hopefully make it to the dyno next Saturday. If things pan out then I may try to go to Atlanta Dragway the following friday (the 23rd) for some times.

In light of recent events I may have to pass on that one.

We'll see what I can pull off soon...

hey Scalbert...awesome work man! Anyway to incorporate a knock senor with your engine and with EManage? Just because you can't hear knock doesn't mean there isn't any right? It's great to see people going the extra mile. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see the power numbers.

Unfortunately no, there is no knock sensor input for the e-Manage. I may end up using an external knock monitor but haven’t decided yet.

I agree, hearing it isn’t everything. But we have to start somewhere and I am using the old fashion method; go until you hear knock and then back off a safe margin. The problem is that it keeps one from running closer to the edge.

Are you planning on doing a 'live' test, i.e, on your car?

I was seriously considering it and will try it time is available. The problem is that mine is a bit of a pain to take out since there is too much cable. I have to take the glove box off. But I want to clean up, e.g. shorten the cables, so this might be the time to do so.

What are you working on now Steve?

Did you see they're having problems with the Loteck pillar pods on the TL's. The credit card I gave them expired and they didn't ship mine, so I don't know this first hand.

One thing that I keep wondering about with the IC is the EGR plumbing. On mine there are passages built into the intake going thru the intake runners. Is that different from yours?

PnP harnesses for Ramanan.

Yea, I saw that and am trying to figure out what went wrong. Thankfully only a few TL owners ordered them.

There is an EGR port in the manifiold base; that part was easy.

I'm sure Loteck will refund, and resell them soon.

Hey Scalbert

Wow good work, what times and mph are you hoping for?

What tires do you have for all that BIG power!!

Thanks,
