My Tranny's Gettin' Replaced
My Tranny's Gettin' Replaced
Add me to the list... :'(
Actually I don't know whether to be sad or happy. My car's transmission is faulty, but at least I didn't have to put up any kind of fight or argument. I just told them about the slippage between 1-2 and 2-3 when it was cold. They kept it overnight and left me a message this afternoon. I'm surprised they decided to go ahead with it because it really operated fine most of the time (although a little rougher than when it was new). I took it to Rosenthal Acura in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
They said that it would only take 3 to 5 days for a new transmission to arrive!
IS THIS POSSIBLE??
I thought people were waiting weeks for these things. What I'm wondering is if they are going to try and replace it with a "rebuilt" transmission insted of a truly new one. I want a new one damnit!
I'm gonna stop by again in the morning and give them a list of other minor stuff to fix (creaky sunroof, etc.) When I talk to them, how can I make sure that they install a brand spankin' new transmission -- fresh off the boat from Japan!! Is there some kind of part or purchase order number I can ask for or something? I'd rather wait for a new one than get one now that's of Good Will quality! What should I say to them?
Thanks!

"Yes, I like to get on the waiting list for a new transmission."
"Certainly. I've got three coming in this month. Would you like silver, silver or silver?"
"I'll take the silver one."
"Great! Just stop by and leave a refundable $1,000 deposit and we can have that to you in five days."
RE: somewhere buried in the threads here or on the TL forum www.acura-tl.com (see TLS section), there was someone who claimed that the "new" fixed transmission have differential bearings (Posting -- was within the last 2-3 month period [I think])
You may want to look -- someone put up some info about the updated parts designation.
(You could always use some UV marker or a small mark to tell if you still have the same box. However, this will only tell you if they did a R&R on your transmission.)
Let's see -- one more slipping clutch job. Clutch packs worn on 1st and 2nd gears...

Wow, best of luck with that. Rosenthal has been a great dealership to me thus far, so I will say I am confident they will do a good job replacing or repairing your transmission. Let me know if anything doesn't work out, as I will be less trustworthy of them in the future. :-\
I hope mine doesn't give out, or if it does, that it does so before my warranty is up.

I don't see how the differential freezing-up would make a 1-2 gear slip or a 2-3 gear slip. However, if the bearing were coming apart, perhaps a bunch of junk would get dumped into the fine fluid passages, valves, and other parts of the transmission. If there was enough debris floating around the transmission before the lube was purged, it could cause some nasty problems with the gear clutch packs.
There was someone over on the TL forum that reported noises coming from the box and yesterday someone reported 4th gear noise.

I saw that, and the only tapered roller bearings are located in the differential carrier (its inside the transaxle and shares the same fluid, but it is removed from the clutches which slip).

And could it be possible that some people got bearings that had the proper temper and other got bearings that were just fine????
Hi Guys,
I finally passed my parole board so I'm out and back on the site!
JUST KIDDING!!!!!
I have 9500 miles on my baby now and it is running great. Am I in the clear of any tranny problems or can I still have problems.

You know, you and I were down and out during a different time (even though it was only a month ago.) Dealerships *could* be getting tranny allotments now.

Bladerunner, it is really impossible to say if you could have problems in the future or not. I don't remember experiencing any trannie issues until about 13,000 miles.
I kept hoping it wouldn't happen to me, but I guess I shoulda' knocked on real wood instead of my bowling ball plastic!!

As much as I don't really like the idea, I think I am going to change my trannie fluid more often too. (after my trannie is replaced that is!)
I mean, I change my oil every 3000 miles, and the manual says that you don't have to for over 5000 miles! (What BS! in my humble opinion). So, I guess it would be ok to carry that same logic over to the transmission fluid changes too. Why go "by the book" which says trannie fluid should be swapped out every 15,000 miles when I don't pay attention to what it says about motor oil changes?
...just a couple of pennies I thought I'd throw out there.

3750 miles city driving
7500 highway
And this is dyno oil.
if you drive 50/50 city/highway I would go with 4000-5000 miles.
"every 3000 miles" is a generic statment that used to be true 15-20 years ago when engines were not so good, and needed more frequent oil changes. Many mechanics recommend 3000 only because they want to make money.
I read a study, that most of the modern cars don't require oil changes every 3000. They did some tests, and some tests show that oil was still fine at 10000 miles on some cars!!!
I personaly use Mobil One synthetic oil, and get 7000 miles out of it. And I am confident that I will not have any problems with my engine due to oil changes.
