My '99 CL vs. '96 VTEC Prelude

Well, I was in OC, just driving around when a black VTEC Prelude creeps up behind be, revs, and changes to the right lane and takes off.

My immediate response was "let's see what this guy has and give him a run for his money". So I pulled next to him, looked at his car and kinda start chuckling. All I'm thinking is that....hey, he could possibly woop me cuz I have an auto, but let's go for it anyhow.

After giving a visual inspection, the light turns green and he guns it...I then hear his car screaming once he hit probably 40mph. I can tell he has intake by this point. I am still coasting towards him because he had could a red light.

Once there, I check out his setup, and realize that he has intake, and exhaust. Whether it was catback or not, I could'nt tell. As for myself, all I have is an axleback muffler, and short ram intake. I figured...this should be pretty good run. I ask him what year his car was and what he's got...he answers cheerfully, "96 VTEC, cold air, custom exhaust". He then asks me if I wanna run on "green". I cheerfully agree...

Anyhow, after conversing for about a whole 30 seconds, the light turns green....he guns off the line, my automatic takes abit longer but within 3 seconds we are neck and neck. I hear he VTEC kick in, my muffler kicks in at ~ 2000RPM....I hit ~3500rpms and my VTEC kicks in....I then smoke him by an easy 2 car lengths....I wish I had my digital because at the next light down...I wish I could've taken a picture of his face...hahahahha

Just sharing my story with you guys/gals. I'm beginning to like my car more and more each day!

I hate to say it but I gotta call BS. Most of all because the 96 vtec is pretty damn fast. But there may be a mix up in your story. The title says 96 vtec and the story says 99vtec. Which one was it.

My friend has a 96 vtec and it romps all over my other friends 3.0.

With the same mods, he should beat you. The 3.0 is pretty fast, but the prelude was tuned more for performance, not for luxury like our cars.

my bad...

My bad, finger cramp I guess....I typed "99 VTEC" instead of "96 VTEC". I know for sure I would not beat a 99 VTEC (cuz they really kick some @ss)

So correction should actually state 1996 VTEC, which...don't get me wrong....it's fast...but on this day...I was faster...hahahah

With your friends KC CL,...maybe you should teach them how to drive?! The 1996 preludes are fast, but they are not as fast as you make them out to be.

Well, either way...I'll take whatever win I can get...considering we have luxury cars, not race cars.

Oh, another story today...on the way home, down Beach Blvd., I got smoked by a blue WRX...I mean really smoked (After awhile I just gave up...no point in wasting gas @ $2.20 per gallon!!!)

Wait a second, the 1996 prelude vtec is rated at 190 hp and 158 lb/ft. Although this is ten less horsepower than the 1997-2001 prelude, the 1996 weighs slightly less. I would think that this match would be the same.

Ive raced both a 2000 prelude and a 96 vtec. I didnt have any problem beating the 96 but the 2000 started pulling on me at about 70mph.

If it was a vtec coupe, it would say vtec on the back, right? Either way good kill, there are a lot of factors that tie into racing. The main factor being the driver, if he knows how to drive, if he has the A/C on

I feel like a broken record...........A/C does not slow you down, you can test this by turning the ac on full blast and floor it, you will feel it just blow out warm air.

EHH, that is incorrect, there was a study done that showed with the A/C on, there can be a 40%reduction in power in some parts of the RPM range.

the study was done a 99 accord, and the results were actually reported on consumer reports.org. Oh and seeing as whenever I have the A/C on and I am driving somewhat aggresivly, my car is slower, that is my proof. But keep in mind, the study shows in some parts oif the RPM range. My OWN proof isnt at WOT, I have never paid attention at WOT.

I jhust realized that buy A/C you mean basically the cooling system right? I am speaking about with the climate control system on whatsoever. I domnt really use the A/C when I am driving aggresively, the windows are usually down. You may be right if you are talking about the cooling system, but I know for a fact that it does not shutoff otherwise. I tried it last night on my way to the university.

Is that a big enough difference? Assume 20% loss on your 195 lbs. of torque...that is what...39lbs..less....so that equals about 156lbs./torque v. the 152 lbs. on the Prelude with 15% drivetrain loss...about 22lbs. so he's at 130lbs. at the wheel...HP 195 v. 200....your whp should be about 160 his is at 170 whp...he is lighter...and has more revs....thus, he doesn't have to shift as quickly....the only thing I can see going wrong is that he wasn't

A) Pushing it or
B) Didn't know how to drive
or C) His custom exhaust was crap and actually made him lose power

Feel free to choose from any or all of the above.

The 96 Prelude VTECs H22= 14.9-15.0 1/4 miles
99 VTECs H23= 15.2 1/4 miles
98 Accord J30= 15.9-16.0 1/4 miles
99 CL J30 = 15.9-16.0 1/4 miles
