Ive used the honda fluid and the amsoil but am wanting to give gm a shot. Ive heard its the cremdelacrem but dont know which to buy. I stopped by the chevy dealership this am and they had two (semi synthetic syncmesh and an older type). I called acura to see what they had to say and was told not to use syncmesh but to use the honda fluid. Now, I know they are just wanting me to buy from them but am I correct in assuming that we use syncmesh in our 6speeds?

So please fill me in on exactly what I need to pick up from GM.

The members on the forums that switched from honda MTF used Syncromesh FM... I am running it as well

 

I just changed mine this past weekend with the latest Honda MT fluid (2.3 qts.). It was like $8.43 per qt. The label has a green background, and states that it is 'New and improved for Honda vehicles'. The shifts felt smooth.

 

FYI the GM Synchromesh found at dealers is the same as Pennzoil Synchromesh found at your local parts store, its just rebranded.

 

Tried new Honda fluid and GM Synchromesh FM. I now have Amsoil manual transmission fluid and it is marginally smoother shifting than the others for me.

 

I have used the old formula Honda stuff, the GM syncromesh, and the reformulated Honda.

I noticed a drastic improvement from the old Honda formula to syncromesh, but no significant difference when I went from syncromesh to the new Honda formula.

I am going to stick with the Honda stuff as it seems to last a little longer before it starts to break down, and the cold shifting was a little better it seemed.

 

I use the new Honda fluid. I really saw no difference. But it's doesn't get cold where i live.

 

You can get any Syncromesh fluid (GM, Penzoil, BG ect..), just make sure it says "Friction Modified" You can get the Penzoil brand from most parts stores. Ask the guy at the counter.

I put it in my 6 speed after trying the "Improved" honda stuff and noticed a difference in cold shifting and less notchyness

 

I'd stick with Honda fluid. All that stuff is really good. Honda Chemicals are the bomb but you'd never really think so.

 

Im running the new Honda MTF now.

I used to run the Pennzoil Synchromesh in my Civic and it was great. It wasnt notchy at all.

You'll be fine with either one. The synchromesh will help mask so notchiness though.

 

thanks to all. Im gong to get the new GM Syncromesh with friction modifier. Its semi-synthetic(only difference from the old gm syncromesh) and thats really my only question. Apparently, the honda fluid is not synthetic. Any harm in using the semi-synthetic? It does get balls cold where I live.

Oh and on a side note, if I want to swap the clutch fluid to something that will be better in cold weather, what brake fluid is recommended?

Id just use any Dot 4 fluid. Water is brake fluid's enemy. Keep water out of the lines and it will be happy.

 

i just got back from associated auto parts and i asked them for royal purple synchromax manual transmission and they have to order it its like 17$ a qt part number 01512 jeeez i think ill get gm synchromesh lol

After i put "new improved honda fluid" i didn't feel much differences.
and i switched to gm syncromesh i felt differences.

To summarize and in case someone else is out there looking to know WHICH GM Syncromesh to use, part #12377916 is the semi-synthetic new version. Its the one I bought and will use tomorrow. I suspect improvements and will leave feedback comparing it to the new honda fluid and Amsoil. Thanks again anthracitecl for confirming my suspicion.

 

I think the proper thing to do would be to stick with the New improved Honda fluid that they recommend. It will conserve your transmission in the long run. To me, this GM fluid just seems to be resembling a turbo on a motor, it will perform like a champ but will wear all the parts out faster than they were meant to.

FYI, the Pennzoil Synchromesh isn't the same as the GM synchromesh. The GM stuff says "Friction Modified" which is supposed to be better for LSDs. I think in some areas they rebranded GM synchromesh to ACDelco Synchromesh which is the same thing even though the part numbers are different. If it matters though I noticed a huge difference in my Integra going from Honda MTF to Pennzoil Synchromesh, but it wasn't an LSD tranny

 

Get 3 quarts, but only fill till the check hole.


That is correct, but I never said the Pennzoil was the same as the Friction Modified GM stuff, just the regular "old" version. I should have mentioned that little tid-bit though since out cars do have an LSD.

 

I used Amsoil and the recommended 2.3 quarts is what you should add. I added 2 1/2 bottles thinking the check hole would drain quickly, WRONG! That stinking thing takes forever to drain...

 

I also used amsoil. not impressed. its been 15k since I put its back to notchy. We'll see if gm is any better. ... I will plug amsoil for their motor oil though; that stuff rocks! especially in cold weather!

+1 for amsoil motor oil but pass on the mt fluid imo

 

i just asked GM dealer about the new transmission fluid its 14.08 + tax for a qt its expensive too... and they dont have it in stock... i have wait one week or just go with honda stuff... i have time but i expected price in 8-10$ range
and its really hard to believe that GM's stuff is better than honda's
