Looking for light 18" rims, need more suggestions

After reading Chod's faq regarding 18" rims:
-18" rims with the same weight as stock will hurt performance due to increased rotational inertia. It needs to be 3-4 pounds lighter to keep the same rotational inertia.

I have found few 18" rims that are light, and I am in the market for some GOOD LOOKING rims while staying light for good performance.

Anyone know how much the SSR GT3 weigh? or the Volk GT-C?

Look at this really light rim! Centerline RPM 18" is 14.5lbs, 19" is 15lbs!

any other suggestions? am I compromising durability/strength of the rim by choosing light ones?

I like the centerline RPM. I couldn't find them anywhere. I got the GT1's on friday and i love them. The GT3's are 24-25lb each. That's from some mag that I get,Can't remember which one. There was a wheel weight guide in it. Hope I helped.

you're not gonna dyno your car with the new wheels are you????...

rise SSR competition 18's not sure but the 17/8 are 14.4 lbs...
or RAYS LE37's or TE37's will be similar in weight to the comps but your talking some bucks for these the rays will approach 2K and the coms 1600$ -1800$..anyway...

i have the same mag, its import tuner and this month's issue is the wheel guide. its a great guide with lists of offsets and weights and available sizes.

they screwed up on the centerline rpm picture in the mag, its a nicer wheel in the mag, i couldnt believe the picture wheel was 15lbs so i had to check out the wheel online itself!

i dont plan to dyno the car, but i will be buying springs, cai, and rims/tires all at the same time. so if im going to be buying rims, i might as well want some performance increase along with the bling

i think the ssr comps are pretty ugly though, i like the rays and volks, but like you said, $$$$$$$$$$

sorry about the confusion....i was talkin to titlan19 about the dyno...he has the 6mt that had the before dyno by UR and i hope i didnt change wheels since the first dyno....or that he'll put on what ever the baseline was done with....

rise on the comps...i dont know if id say ugly myself...but im not sure how id like the anthcrite center...if i go that way i thought about having my friend polish out the centers....but like i said really the comps are like 439 ea. thats almost 1800$ plus shipping...the rays id think you could get for 2K being there's more sites that sell those...problem is you need 700+ worth of tires too...and at now almost 3 grand starts making the comptech SC very appealing....

ouch thats a big hit to the pocketbook. i guess i should set my sights a little lower on a good wheel for price/performance/looks/weight

Hate to bum you out, but the Centerline's wont fit our cars. They only have +40 offset with out bolt pattern. When I talked to them at SEMA down in LA, they did not have plans to make a higher offset.

Supposedly the Racingharts are the lightest rims you can get...not sure. The C5s and the M5s are the tightest. But be forewarned that if you get the Evolution series (the cheaper version that is one piece), you would need to get ATLEAST 19" due to offset problems.

i was looking online and i do NOT want the phillipines-made RH EVO m5. but the real 3piece racing hart m5 is sweet looking, but very expensive (2400 at washingtontire.com).

i guess i might have to strike a balance of looks/price/weight and go with SSR comps or something...

any other suggests? maybe i'll go with SSR, they seem to be pretty good, any ideas?

SSR Competition 18x8 +48 offset -- about 15 lbs. Special forging -- highly resistant to "impacts" from potholes etc (well, within limits). They were designed to be extreamly resilient.

Volks SE-37A (18x7.5) (check out Astros wheel -- they are very nice, strong and lightweight).

Links to wheel weights:

http://www./tech/wheel_weights.html
http://www.mysportscar.com/features/wheelweight.htm

Try to stay in the +48-+52mm offset range (+55 is stock) when runing 8" wheels.

The tables don't have the SE-37A and the SSR Comps in the 18x8 -- however, they are very light and the 14.4 for the 17x8s in a bit high (IMO).

I've posted this before, but it's very helpful, particularly when you are primarily concerned w/ weight

does rim weight really matter soooo much to u guys?!?!

just get some rims that look nice to u, doesn't matter how much they weigh, they won't affect your speed that much...

You'd be surprised how much heavy rims affect a car's performance and ride. Heavy rims introduce extra strain onto the suspension, increases braking distance, increases the chance of torque steer.

Racing Hart CP-035 is what you should be looking at. If you want light weight rims, you should get at most 17". The set of CP-035 I have weighs in at a feathery 13lb for 17x7.5. Centerline is really a track wheel, not for daily driving. I introduced a memeber on accordv6.com to the CP-035. It cost me $2600 witih tires,..you think I'm crazy..maybe? My past impression with a set of ADR rims simply took all stock HP power to hell. My car actually takes off faster on CP-035s than using stock 15" wheels. I reduced almost 4lb at each corner. As a standard calculation I found somewhere, 1lb at the wheel = 8lb everywhere else on a car. I reduced 16lb at the wheels, and that equals to 128lb...

Up to you Kevin.....I can get you Volks....SSRs....ADRs....Nippon....
When it comes down to it....rims are for looks....get what you think looks cool...if you wanna race, get another set....

As soon as I put on my SSR I felt a tremendous difference, not as much on acceleration but in braking......hell yeeeaaa.

those 18" SSR Comps look pretty nice! but they look small because the spokes taper inward....making the tires look big....but i still kinda like it!!

cant wait to see it with a comptech drop

Depends on the offset.

AND

I'm not saying that they are dramatically lighter, just a fraction of a lb less...

17x7 -> 13
17x8 -> 14.0 - 14.5 (depending on who you talk to...)
17x9 -> 15.6

18x8 -> 15 lbs

26lbs (OEM tire) - 23.8 (T1s) (-2.2lbs)
26lbs (OEM wheel) 26lbs (SSR) (-14lbs)

16.2 x 4 (figuring on the greedy side) 64.8lbs (more like 50 lbs less if the wheels are figured high and the stock stuff figured a bit on the low figures)

Like removing 150-180lbs of dead/static weight...

AND equivalent torque (don't get the "extra" push tht the pulleys give in the lower gears relative to 3rd, but):

(1 + (180/3500)) * 200 WHP = equiv HP = 210WHP or
(1 + (180/3500)) * 190.0 *TQ = torque gain (across the board) = 200 lb-ft (or 10 lb-ft more across the band)

http://integra.vtec.net/wheels/rotation.html

AND

http://www.udallas.edu/physics/GP1/r...on_ii_faqs.htm

the outside of the wheel is moving at twice the speed of the car.

Mass of wheels being moved (like baggage): 1 +
Outside of wheels moving at 2x speed of vehicle 2 =
--------------------------------------------------------------
Equivalent guesstimate of rotation mass is around 3

More to this and YMMV (the wheels are non-homogenous...)

My 18x7.5 Volk TE-37s are awesome. Strong and light and they look great in polished silver. Check out Hammermans profile and click on his web site and look under Red Rider. Hammer has the Comp SSRs in 17, you can check those out as well.
